As title really, bit of a silly question but wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid before getting all my winter rugs! Is there a reason that rugs are 'stable rugs' or 'under rugs'? :D xxx

yup - i layer with stable rugs under turnouts :)
i use a full neck duvet style WB under rug under a full neck turnout in really cold weather - in the -16 days we had here last winter my horses had one of them on, then a half neck turn out then a full neck turn out - she lives out 24/7 fully clipped and was happy as larry :) that was extreem winter though - i'd hope not to have to rug at that level again for a long time lol!!

Depends on the rug. Some stable rugs have a "slippery" outer cover, and I suppose the chance of the field rug on top slipping and twisting round is too risky. However some stable rugs have a rougher (matt?) outer cover, so using one of these rugs might be okay? Why not try it one day when you are going to be around the yard for a few hours and make sure your horse has a good roll and the rugs stay safe before deciding whether to stick with it or not?

Rambo do the Duo liners in various weights and I would prefer to put these under turnout rugs rather than a stable rug. They fasten at the chest with velcro and have clips at the back corners which can clip onto the leg rings/filet string rings on the back of the turnout rug. Im not keen on stable rugs under turnouts due to the extra belly straps which horses have a habit of getting themselves caught up in. I have also used the liners under stable rugs when horses are stabled like last winter when it was so cold.

Yep i always use stable rugs under my TO rugs, keeps my boy nice and snug. Wouldnt pay out for under rugs as have so many stable rugs i can use!!!

I,ll never buy another stable rug - when i bought my horse last year i bought 3 of each weight of stable and turnout - Ive never used the stable rugs!

always have used stable rugs as under layers and always will. Mainly as when its a cold day it means i dont have to strip him back to nothing to change all rugs just for him to go out for a few hours/ a day. Obviously i do check him underneath his rugs before people think i just leave that bit out! Iwouldnt buy an underrug specifically as for extra straps and moving aslong as it fits well and usually they fit snugger than TOs but iv got a couple that are great as have a belly flap rather than straps one im not sure of make the other is an old WB one and they are v snuggly x

i use a fleece or waffle under a turnout havent needed to use his stable one though but i wouldnt use the one he wears at night as might get uddy knowing my pony :p

Yep! I know lots of people who layer them under turnout rugs. Apparently you shouldn't layer fleeces because they slip around more and cut up withers? xx

I dont know if you shouldnt but I used one last winter when it was cold as he had all his stable rugs on already and no spare dry turnouts other than his top layer! But yea it slipped back alot more but for the few hours he had it on I didnt mind wouldnt use one all day and night. I have since invested in another stable rug!! He is a mega wuss who gets cold and looses weight in seconds!
