My TB is very sensitive to certain feeds and gets really out of hand and turns into a mad scary beast to handle and ride if she has said feed, so far its alfa a and outshine. I have been adding oil to her feed (recommended by my vet) for slow energy release, weight and condition. She has been having it now for a week and am building it up, she has been off work due to removal of teeth 10 days ago and am due to ride out thuis afternoon. Thing is she has been really stroppy and racing round the field and doind huge broncs and rears and also a bit too forward and has started to *get big* when i lead her down to the field, the other day she bit me too which is so out of charachter. Do you think the oil is affecting her? i have read that oil wont make her blow her top but now am not so sure. Also she has been having barley rings but has been on these for months now and she is fine on them, i think it maybe the oil?
Any suggestions?

Traditionally, oats, barley and maize are said to be heating and things such as oil and alfalfa are supposed to be slow release, non heating energy sources.

However there are plenty of people who testify to have a horse who reacts to alfa and is fine fed on oats, they are all individual and it can be trial and error to see what sets them off and what doesn't. In your case it does sound like she could be reacting the oil, although I've never heard of a horse going hyper on oil before. If you cut it out you'll find out soon enough.

My mare turns crazy on cereals so her diet is based on alfalfa and oil, perhaps if yours get on with cereals she should have a cereal based diet with ad lib hay/haylage. People on your yard are bound to think you are mad but its horses for courses, whatever works!

Yeah she is funny, barley dosent affect her at all, where as alfaa sends her through the roof. I will cut it from her feed starting from tonight see if it makes a difference. It seems all the things i give that put on weight and condition really affect her, she is so hard to put on the weight, shes having speedi-beet and barley rings and a small handful of hifi light and has ad lib best quality hay of a night.......but shes still ribby

the vet has been out, she has had her teeth done shes fine in herself and has a glossy coat but is still thin............she wont stay in all day and eat hay she goes mad if shes kept in the stable and ends up stressed and sweaty.
So fustrating!!! as the oil is starting to make a difference too.........*SIGH*

has she been like this before? If so maybe she is just feeling good.

you could cut the oil out for a while and see what happens. If she is better off it maybe try corn oil instead

Shes only ever this hyper when shes eating something thats blown her top! am riding with a friend today, no open fields just round the quiet lanes so will see how she is today.
