Can ultrasonography be done at home - or does horse need to go to the vet?

As per title really - I am guessing that horse may need one to find the location of abscess internally, but want to avoid travelling to vets if at all possible!

It can be done at yard providing the vet in question has the equipment! Our most local vet has neither sonographic equipment nor portable x ray equipment ! I was amazed that this vet group with three surgeries couldnt do it so my previous vet travels 35 miles to us to do planned visits.
Costs for scanning mares was about £30 each.

Our local vets have a portable ultrasound scanner, and they've brought it here to scan mares in foal, though I've needed to ask beforehand to be sure they bring the one and only scanner with them, and that another vet doesn't have it in their car that day.

However, there's a vet clinic an hour away that has a much more sophisticated scanner, and I'm guessing there may be some things that it's best to look at with that scanner rather than the portable one............. but I know nothing!

It depends on the portability of the vet's machine. Many equine vets have portable ones for orthopaedic work, and some of these would also be suitable for abdominal scanning. However, some may have a different/more powerful machine for abdominal scans which is often not very portable.
