Can we have the posts staying where they are?

How funny that a thread about the bumping to the top feature that most people dislike (myself included) is constantly being bumped to the top of the list by the stupid feature!!

At least admin will get to see it!

I have used this vBulletin on other forums, and the system is fine on there, because they are so much quieter, but with HHO, it just does not work. I'm wondering what I have missed as I get sick of the time it takes to load (apparently I need to use a different browser, or switch off the blocker) and I keep missing the topics with less replies because I just don't have the patience to see the same topic rising to the top time after time after time after time after time after time...

I completely agree, this forum is too big for it to be successful. I no longer spend much time on here:(

I like everything but the bumping up of the popular thread!! I really hope admin take this post into consideration alter it somehow :( it is ruining my time on here :(

It's more annoying that there are so many threads about the new forum, that's really not helping with posts being missed and ending up on page 2.

I am not a computer nerd by any means, but it never ceases to amaze me that in computer terms, "upgrade" tends to turn out as "fiddle about unnecessarily with something that worked fine but could just be a bit faster". Most of us just want something basic that nevertheless does it's job - a kettle that boils water quite quickly, for instance, or a watch that tells the time. We don't want a kettle with a tiny TV in as well, or a watch with satnav- we just want hot water for a cup of tea or to know whether it's one o'clock yet. We have just had a major "upgrade" on our computer system at work and I can honestly say it does not have one redeeming feature about it. It is slower, the icons are blinding, the font is smaller and grey so you can't read it and it takes more "clicks" to do things. It has new all singing all dancing features that you don't need and will never use. It must have cost a fortune and has not improved our working life one iota and in fact has made it worse. It has a feature, for instance, where a new e-mail message fades in (slowly) on the bottom right hand of the screen and then fades out again (equally slowly). During this time, your key board freezes and you have to stop whatever you're typing. Everyone has turned it off, so just where is the use in that?

It might be fun for computer whizz kids to play with all this stuff, but most of us aren't whizzy and we just want basic and quick. The computer equivalent of a well schooled riding club horse that will hack out with no complications, pop a round of jumps, hunt a couple of times a year and do a novice dressage test, good to catch, load, shoe and clip. Because basically, if we're honest, that's as much as most of us want and can cope with.

But then I suppose that's what the Luddites said. (On the other hand, I've just tried to preview this and submit it and nearly lost the will to live it was so slow)

Amused that all of the people that are complaining the forum is too slow are those with the huge, colourful signatures. The reason it takes so long to load is because the server is contacting photobucket to download the images. If everyone removed their huge photo siggies we wouldn't have that problem.

I also love that everyone's threatening to leave. Just leave then? The forum is free - unless everyone wants to chip in and contribute towards a custom built one on a huge server (which I assume was one of the main reasons for moving to this one) then please stop complaining... it's downright ungrateful. This is one of (if not the) most used and viewed equestrian forums on the Internet and personally I think H&H are doing a bloody good job of keeping up to it (apart from banning the most knowledgeable users, but that's another thread ;) )

It is incredibly easy to find threads. If you honestly cannot find one, just click the search button.

It is possible to keep the threads in the order that they were started by choosing that option in the box on the bottom left of the board and then changing threads by using the back button on your computer. When you change boards though you need to go through the whole process again.
I have just changed my browser to Google Chrome as someone suggested that this would speed things up. Well it might have but everything is still slower than on the old version of HHO.

Ooooh if you could find me one of those that would be great - the horse description I mean - I have bought two I thought were that and both turned out to be total arses for one reason or another!
On the topic of this new forum I also hate this most popular post first nonsense. I never know where to look for posts I was interested in, though before I could remember roughly between which other posts they fell. Hating this new forum style!!!

It can be changed by each user but it has to be done repeatedly. You need to go to the main room, such as New Lounge, Soapbox etc and tick the 'show thread start time' rather than 'show newest posts'.

It's simple to do but you just have to do it every 30 minutes or so or each time you log-on. No big deal really :)

I have avatars, signatures and images turned OFF in my preferences. The pages are taking ages and ages to download for me so that is definitely not the reason for the slowness in my case.

Please - can we have the old system back, when the posts used to stay in the same place, rather than the popular ones jump to the top?

Ok i am rather boring - but did use the forum for valuable advice - now i stand no chance as if i ask "recomend a pessoa kit" its off onto page 2 in the blink of any eye.

Also when you wanted to look back on a popular post, you always knew where to find it.

Please have a re-look at this as i for one dont like it

thanks

GW
I think its great, popular posts go back to the top saves trawling back and the dull ones soon get lost in cyber space, suits me fine, something that anoyed me about the old forum is gone ...

i agree with you, the bumping up of messages is really annoying! Ive found its making me read the forum less as its a pain trawling through all the posts iv already read. You used to be able to log on and know if you looked at the first couple of pages you would have caught up on all the gossip! Iv also found the new system really slow!

I too liked that about the old one. Tis a shame but like someone said its free and H&H are doing a great job generally so I guess if its the only real problem we are lucky

Munchkin - it's not moaning it's called having an opinion. You have yours and others have theirs. Oddly enough it is allowed.

It's quite nice to see that some people aren't afraid to say they don't like the changes but it would be nice if they could say this without being called ungrateful for doing so!

I agree that it is annoying and would much prefer being able to choose (permanantly) how I view threads. I am spending much less time on here now :(

If you want to keep up to date with a thread, to come back to it later, then subscribe to it :) At the top click thread tools and hit subscribe.

When you want to check it, go to your UserCP (top burgandy line, first choice) and the thread will be there for you to choose :D

I'm amazed how many people didn't have this new setting as default on the old server! To me it makes total sense, the most active topics are at the top so easy to see if there have been new replies :)

Horses for courses I guess.

Ditto - I agree.

If it drops to page two just post again to "Bump" it up again. The advantage of having the posts arranged this way is that people see them when someone posts something new. So if you post reccommend me a pessoa and I reply same day "I've got one from shires" and you reply is that the black one or the blue one but I'm off line, when I come back on and reply my reply will bump it to the top so you and everyone else can see it.

The fact that it pops back up will hopefully mean that you will eventually get more replies and also that we have less "recommend me a pessoa" threads as people will be able to find the old one and bump it up.

On boards with really active admins they can merge similar threads too so that the board stays tidier.

It will keep long ongoing threads together too as each day/week the old thread can be bumped up and added too rather than starting a new one. So Sweet FA and Hovis' friday diary can be just one long thread that is bumped.

I liked that the board moved on quickly from petty argumental threads with pack attacks, now they remain the most popular with this system. Not good.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.
Not true.
Old forum you could view threads in the order posted, or by newest post. You had choice which is how to please people. Now we have a system which is p!ssing off at least half the forum who chose the option no longer available. (would enter smirk smiley but its gone :(;) )

Same!

It never occurred to me that people wouldn't have changed their settings on the old forum to have it this way?!

Lol, I tried it a few times and just couldn't wait to get back to my old 'steady' settings and now I'm stuck with the awful thing!

Being anal as I am, I think I have sussed out how this system could work better for others like me, who liked the old 'set in stone' system but you will have to try it to see if it works for yourselves.

Instead of using new posts which I always did on old system, I now look in each separate forum; check it all out, read what I want then mark the forum read. Then do the same with each forum you're interested in; for me, that's breeding, NL, competition, stableyard, hunting and dogs. It's worked a treat so far for me, you straight away see new threads and new posts; if you reply you automatically get emails to tell you (switch that on in your options if you haven't already) or you can subscribe to any threads you want to keep tabs on. Yes, the new posts keep rising to the top but if you've marked the forum as read, there aren't so many to sift through as new or unread ones will show up.
It's working for me so far anyway, just thought some of you might like to try it, after all, we're all in the same boat so anything to help us must be a bonus I think.

Anyone know how to get back to page 6 of the thread index from page 3 of posts without using the back button?

There used to be an index button but I haven't found an equivalent on this board.

Back button it is I think!
Do you not have a drop down list by the side of your back button which gives your latest history? There certainly is in Firefox and if you use that, it will take you back to the page you want.
