I think you're being a tiny weeny bit pessimistic here.

I know many horses who have had far worse injurieds and come through far worse colics to compete at a high level again.
She's young, you've got all the time in the world- why on earth shouldnt she lead a perfectly normal ridden life?

well i'll give you my vet's opinion based on what you've told us. there is no reason why she wont recover well from the colic surgery with no long lasting effects and no reason why that wouldn't stop her competing - look at Will Funnell's Amber du Montois - back at Olympia this yr after colic surgery last year. Take the suspensory as a separate issue and there are plenty of horses a lot older than Grace who have recovered well from it so again, no real reason why she shouldn't make it back to full fitness. Always have hope - it's good for you. I still have vague glimmers that one day i might be able to hack my horse again and he really is knackered - the hope keeps me going.

Thank you everyone... I feel a bit more positive having read that article, and something Tempi texted me this week has made me thing. She said that Hannah had 13 months off when she had her foal and she has come back better than ever. I know that it is not the same thing a horse having time off for injury and one having time off for having a foal, but you still have to bring them back into work slowly and carefully.

Grace will be having her suspensory scanned for the final time while she is away at thew YEC so if that is good news then the walking we are doing for the colic (and lots of it) will start to strengthen everything and will do it so much good.

Then, when I can get back on her in May (I am looking at 4 months of being unable to ride her) then at least her suspensory will not be the main issue...
