My horse seriously could do with some, he needs to chill! At this point in time I cannot imagine him ever being relaxed enough to do a dressage test.

Went out for our second affilated today. 3rd time out. He was soooo tense the whole time and this, obviously, reflects in his marks.

we got 57.49 in the first test. The best he's gone. Even got 3 7's and was quite pleased. I now its a crap result but until he chills we arent going to get anywhere.

So, with that in mind, it was ok.

The second test was horrendous. He was napping, cantering when he was supposed to be trotting, I went wrong and we got 50%

Anyway, I was so pleased overall, its all experience at the end of the day.He travelled brillantly and was very well behaved when we "popped" into Mc Donalds on the way home!

Well done! It will all come together - the more he gets out the more he'll learn that it's not all that big a deal! I would just keep on going. Do you take him out for lessons and stuff? Or box up and go hacking somewhere? It all helps in how the react in a new place.

Just started taking him to my trainer. And he has been out in the box once for a hack!

I was speaking to another Andy owner today and she sympathised with me. Her Andy who, I believe is 6 and a lot more experienced got the same score as me in the first test so that made me feel a little better!
 
Piaffe - I'm going to send you a very lengthy PM which describes the warm up routine that my instructor gave me as my lad was always very very tense in dressage and we never really got anything above 60% (all unaffiliated). I had great results with this - got a 70% first time out! I sent it to Icestationzebra and she too saw great improvements from it. I'm not saying it will definately work, all I can say, it made a difference to us!

As to your orignal question - might be worth a try LOL!

Those marks aren't bad - he hasn't done a lot yet.

My OH was telling me today how they feed American Saddlebreds out in South Africa LSD to make them look more 'expressive' Would think it would be quite scary to sit on.
 
What tests did you do? From what I've seen of Andalucian's they aren't really suitable for lower level dressage because of their way of going. That's just what I've seen of one or two so sorry if I'm way off the mark there. Saw one doing a prelim test once and it was awful - but if he'd gone in and done the elementary it would have looked fine. Does that make sense? It's almost as if they need busier tests where their sort of outline is needed, to make them think a little more! Get him out and about

N22 and 38. Yes you are so right. I was going to take him out at Elem for that very reason but was talked out of it.

Def getting out and about more. I have a lesson on wed and then another comp on Fri. Its fun, even if we are rubbish! LOL

It's all experience as you well know - I posted last weekend about winning a novice BD qualifier with 67%. What I didn't mention was that 2 hours earlier he'd only got 58% in the prelim cos he was such a tense spooky pratt (even though we still came 4th?!!!). This is a horse that is never spooky and usually relaxed! They throw things at you on purpose some days I feel - just to bring you back to reality!
 
LOL. So true! I was feeling better after our first test as our marks seemed to be raising slowly, only to come crashing back down!!!

Well done by the way. Cant imagine ever winning anything, let alone getting any points! lol

It worked quite well for me too!! Just struggled with trotting straight into the arena, she would'nt go in!!!!!

Honestly, the more you do the better he will get when he gets used to it.
 
I may in my younger days have got F to inhale the smoke trailing from a spliff.... he seemed quite happy, whereas he hates cigarette smoke... never had the guts to try it at a competition though.
 
morning hun, where did you go for your tests? equisense? Girl from my yard did the elementary and medium there if you did go, her name is Andrea something. Her horse competes advanced but is still in elementary points and im going to be competing it Advanced for her!! Hes gorgeous, not sure what his comp name is tho!!

ETS - what tests did you do?

He was really spooky last time out too and I really don't know what to do with him. He won't go down 1 side of the arena at Golden Cross and just sticks his quarters in and puts his head in the air!
Well done tho, and I'm sure he will chill out soon. Do you give him a calmer? I'm tempted to give Axey a syringe full of So Kalm next time

Oooh I was just scrolling down to add that I have done that. Strange isn't it - they hate the smell of straights but add in a little touch of something. . . . . . . mind you I don't think I'd have wanted (or been able) to ride mine though. And it was nearly 30 years ago!

In those days I also had the ride on a mare who used to make straight for the beer tent after a round and expect a rum and blackcurrant. She'd hold the plastic glass in her teeth and tip it down her throat!
