Yep - loads of sugar, only one or two per day for fat ponies - if any at all!
My pony is on a very light diet - and as a treat he has a carrot in his "feed" to help the medicine go down. He is not laminitic but is too fat and has arthritis.
Bless him - he is so hungry he thinks it is the best thing all day...I used to give him several. He is nearly at an ideal weight so I am trying not to slip back into giving him too much to eat!
Someone told me that feeding too many carrots has a laxative effect. I suppose a bit like feeding too much of most things it would upset the digestive system a bit.

I do want weight on but is it still bad?

Yes, feeding your horse sugar is basically the same as having a thin person and then stacking them full of chocolate to make them gain weight - not the healthiest way!! Carrots are fine for horses in moderation (as with everything).
