Those with a good eye, or anyone who has one available, can you find me a nice breaking trap for a 13.2hh lightweightish pony for a reasonably small budget? I am willing to pay more for a nicer one which will be for long term use :)

Look at the carriage link website also dragon driving for second hand .
New hillam , hartland , and Bennington .

Whether cheap or not the most important thing is it is well balanced - the weight should all go onto the wheels, not on the pony's back - assuming you are looking at a 2 wheeled cart.

How to tell?

Get someone to sit in the cart (its important to have weight in the cart), stand in the middle of the shafts and pull them up. You should find a natural balance point, hopefully about the height of your ponies back, where the cart is really easy to pull.

If it doesn't have a natural balance point, don't buy, lots of cheap carts just aren't made properly.

(PS sure you already know this, but it is an amazing thing when you actually try it and you realise how difficult it is for a pony to pull a badly balanced cart!.)

canteron- I know exactly what you mean so many ive seen advertised not particularly cheaply which wouldn't be at all balanced and wouldn't put anywhere near pony's back, i did have a look on dragon driving and i cant believe some of the prices for things you can see are so unbalanced.

If pony in question becomes a superstar driving pony i hope to invest in a four wheeler but we will have to see how it goes as budget doesn't quite stretch to a nice four wheeler just to see how she goes, as the purpose of breaking her to drive is for my mum to exercise her while im at university, so if all goes well i will make a major investment as pony in question is a showjumping pony who is very forward going ridden but harnessed and long reined is a complete saint a small child could do it and 5 days out of work a week doesn't keep her as fit as id like.
