I used to have a fab pair of reins- thin and light with strips of rubber running lengthwise through the reins.

This would have been in the 90s
Is there anything like this on the market?

I've got a new horse who is very light in the mouth and my old-ish rubber reins are too clumpy for the contact that he currently wants

Like the more old fashioned continental reins?

Or more this style?

I have some Henry James eventer reins, they're about 8 years old but still in perfect condition. Strong, flexible and not too thick.

You could try the quiz to see what comes up.

@Dave's Mam I'll have a look.
I've had ordinary rubber reins for so long, I've never needed to look at anything else!

If you have used standard rubber for a long time have you considered the biogrips/equivalent. They look pretty similar to rubber reins but are thinner/lighter/floppier and sound like they might be ideal for what you need? They are my go to reins.

I have Biogrips now and then thicker rubber for something like hunting and team chasing.

I ride with Sabre reins. Fine soft leather with no rubber. My old share had them and I bought some for my present ride. Mark Rashid taught one that the reins connect the most sensitive part of the horse to the most sensitive part of the human, and I like to think of it like that. Which means soft supple reins.

They seem to have been accepted without comment by her other sharers and eventually her rubber stopped, RS style reins were put away in the store.

@ihatework I had a pair of biogrip and loathed them with a passion - I eventually gave them away to a friend. They were lovely, light and soft .... but with a strong horse, they always gave me the feeling that they were stretching. It was weird.

@Skib I grew up with plain leather reins on my ponies. I get your point about softness but not in the rain...... i remember all too well having leather reins slide through my fingers in the pouring rein....

I love HJ reins having had a few pairs and am now converted to their Impression grip reins. Really light and thin; more importantly really comfortable for my old hands. Have on dressage bridle and saving for a second pair for the grackle.

I started riding aged 60 with the least expensive gear. I love my Roekl gloves (and OH's winter ones) but have never thrown away my pimple cotton gloves and I rode in them last summer. Or indeed with no gloves at all.

Yes they would be horrid on a strong puller!!
But are lovely on something light in the contact
