My friend and I have just gone halves on an 18hh Hanoverian he is so good at dressage in my opinion so I am dying to get him out there to see if it is as true as everyone says. Can we get him in an ifor 510/511 or do we need a box? He is medium build he isn't wide. Love some advice on this from as many as possible.

generally speaking the 510/511 takes up to 17.2, but i think it would depend on your horses head carriage as to whether he'd be comfortable, wouldn't want him to bash his head.

others on here are probably better equipped to answer this than me :o

YES!
I have an 18.2hh Clydie who I travel in a Richardson Supreme Ultra (with partitions in so we could theoretically take a friend too) and find he fits better in this than my friend's massive Oakley wagon. Consider a poll protector if he has a very high head carriage though.
Just beware that the 511 has reduced head room compared to the older 510s.

Seen lots of Clydesdales come out of trailers without partitions but do use a full front and back bar--dont allow horse to lean on back door
A Hanoverian may well have a higher head carriage so a poll guard would add to the safety

Ditto tha it's quite possible. My 18.1hh TB mare used to travel in a IW 505 just fine. Sure she couldn't throw her head around in the air, but as she was a good traveller this was never a problem. She was a narrow built TB and although always we travelled her on her own, we did have the partition in place. If she'd been broader we'd have removed the partition and just used the breast bar attachment across the front. She was a broodmare and was only boxed to and from the vet a couple of times a year. Had I been travelling her more, I'd definitely have upgraded to a IW510 though!

A friends 18.2 ID travels in a new Ifor 510 without issues :)

Hey I was wondering if your friend travelled with or without partitions in the Ifor 510? and what sort of build would you say he is.

Thank you so much for everyones help. Will take more. I am glad people have all said mainly yes. Excited to take him out and about.

Really? In a 505?

Yes. We were going to get a bigger trailer as we thought we would need one but couldn't before collecting him so we thought we'd try him in the 505 (previous owner assured us he had travelled in one before).

He loads on his own and travels very quietly. He will stand on the box all day at a show as required too. Has never bumped his head or rubbed his bottom. We use mare and foal bars (front and back). No partition - he stands on a herringbone and sleeps throughout journeys!

That makes sense, had visions of you asking him to kneel down! lol. I thought there may not be enough headroom in the 505, but if hes happy then there obviously is x

Definitely. My 18.1hh Shire mare travels comfortably in our Ifor Williams 510. She is massive and has a neck and crest almost like a stallion. We always travel her with the partitions, breast and breeching bars. Having said that, the breeching bar is a bit tight, but I'd rather that than have her leaning on the door/ramp. I always have her wear a tail guard and travel boots.

I have a friend who has travelled 2 Shire stallions in the new Ifor Williams 511 with a head partition.

Not sure about the partitions as I've never been around when she's been loaded. Sort of MW build I'd say :)

I have the new HB511 however my lad is 16.2 maybe 16.3 on tiptoes and he's a WB but more of a TB build with quite a naturally high head carriage and travels with an IDxTB 16hh and I wouldn't want to put anything bigger in tbh. I like them to have plenty of room and would just feel that 18hh would be pushing it a bit, but maybe that's just my preference...

My horse is 17.3hh and usually quite cramped in my friends lorry. But it broke down and we had to borrow an IW510 so he was on near side and a 16.1hh on other side and they traveled beautifully! And had more room length ways than in lorry :)

I am more than happy for preferences etc. We have a 17.2 ID x TB and he fits in it quite nicely no head carriage issues etc in it at all and he has a really high head carriage sometimes to the extend i can't see where we are riding cause he sticks it up so much!

I think we are possibly considering trying it and see if he goes in and how he feels before we actually take him anywhere in one. Otherwise we might be getting a box. He neck is so long and unless someone is riding him he does like to hold it high in the air! So I think it will be a no he doesn't fit in it comfortably. But we will see. Thank you for every ones help.

What is everyones opinion on the richardson trailers with the 7ft 8 head room compared to the ifor's 7ft 6 head room will the 18hh fit in that better? or will it be just as snug? As i was looking and apparently 18hh should fit in something with 7ft 8 head room.

We tried him in a horse box he was too long but had no head room issue at all. So its going to have to be an ifor 510 for travelling cause its longer!

My 19hh Shire x WB travels in my Ifor Williams HB511 no problems and that's with the partitions in!

He is HUGE......but seriously he is very happy in there.

This is after travelling down to me....for comparison the horse next to him is 16.1hh

Yes you can. Just get him on his knees and make him crawl in.

Funnily enough its not his height thats the issue its his length! He holds his head lower than our 17.2 which fits in a 510 fine but he felt squished in a horse box! So its going to have to be a trailer which has room for his neck!

Thats amazing! He looks bigger than ours so this has given me the confidence ours will go in. Fingers crossed cause was gutted couldn't go out today to compete cause he didn't go in but it wouldn't of been fair on him to make him shake the whole way there!

although some will travel happily in a trailer not all biggies will, my 17hh girl has to go on a lorry as she had an incident in a trailer where she hit her head so won't go in one now. i would want to do a short tester journey with a new biggie just to check they were happy:)
plus don't forget to check if you can tow a large trailer+ large horse with the vehicle you're going to tow with;)

Mine hates the lorry we didn't even go anywhere before we got him back out he was bracing himself before we even left the yard! So thats why we are trying a trailer he needs neck space which a trailer gives. We ain't going to take him far we just going to see if he fits the first time. and then attempt it if he fits. not sure what we are going to do otherwise.
