Can you get an 18hh horse in a trailer?

I bought my trailer specifically to fit the 18hh horse, he is 7'3" in rugs so big in all directions. I bought a big Rice double trailer, it is higher and wider than the IW alternatives and the big lad travels very happily in it. I have also travelled a big Percheron in this trailer

I did wonder about the those trailers, we aren't buying one yet we just hire them from a friend. Ours is in a 7ft rug so maybe he will fit in the IW I know the IW are not the best but as the companies say its what people expect when the hire a trailer so thats what they have to have even though it doesn't fit the biggest horses. Its not the height or the width that he don't like its the length he has a long neck! So hoping the IW thats like 11ft inside should fit his length.

My 17.2hh MW fits really well length and height wise in my new Cheval Liberte GOLD ONE which is the new mare and foal trailer. It's like a tardis inside. So light and airy.

xx

My 19hh Shire x WB travels in my Ifor Williams HB511 no problems and that's with the partitions in!

He is HUGE......but seriously he is very happy in there.

This is after travelling down to me....for comparison the horse next to him is 16.1hh

Ha, ha! This looks just like my Percheron (c.18hh) and my IDxTB (16.1hh) in our 511 except ours are both grey. I always used to use a lorry for my Percheron but he's actually got much more space in a 511, particularly lengthwise and plenty more if you remove the partition.

Always henesy what a brilliant pic!

Is there a legal height for horse trailers to be? My ponies go in the cattle trailer very happily and there is plenty of head room, is that acceptable?

Thank you! No legal height limit as far as I am aware, just weight.
He weighs around 850kg now so can travel him and my friends 600kg WB easily with my Jeep.

No reason why your ponies shouldn't travel in a cattle trailer.

This is my lad to give you an idea of his size. I am 5'10" and he makes me feel small.

He is lovely AH. You look small on him too!!

I once had a very snooty shetland pony breeder tell me it was illegal to travel ponies in cattle trailers because they aren't high enough but have not found anything to back this up.

Being as they are 13.2 and under there is plenty of head room but I had visions of taking my daughter to pony club for the first time and getting a life time ban for cruelty to ponies :D

we had a 17.2hh horse that didnt fit in a 505 and found it tight enough in a 510! my hubbys a farmer so we decided to get the ta510 the new cattle/horse trailer it has all the i4 williams normal partitions but also has everything to accomidate cows! its fab longer than the 510 and the ramp has the gates so is really inviting for young stock!

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7CRD automatic

It can tow 3500kg

That may well be the case, however the kerb weight of your car is about 1,700kg. The trailer (at 1000kg) plus the two horses pictured 1,450kg add up to 2,450kg....significantly outweighing the towing vehicle.

The kerb weight of my L200 is 1,900kg, and interestingly it is limited to a tow weight of 2,700kg...and I aim to never get anywhere near that, in fact I plan to never exceed the weight of the towing vehicle for maximum safety and stability

I have a Wessex Olympian trailer and I tow my 17.1hh ISH x HOL mare and my friend's 18.1hh Hann x TB gelding comfortably......

I use a JEEP Cherokee 2.5TD CRD to tow - towing capacity 2800kgs

If you were being a purist, for maximum safety and stability you would not tow more than 85% of your vehicle's kerb weight. With many trailers at c. 1,000kg that means you would only have 615kg spare to tow one horse or two small ponies.

You are right to be cautious with a pick-up however. As the bulk of the weight of the vehicle is at the front, you have a large area of the back of the vehicle and front of the trailer which is light and therefore more prone to snaking.

Many of the big 4x4s are capable of more as they come with additional features such as trailer stability control. However this is no substitute for driver ability.

Erm actually you are wrong.

The unladen weight of my trailer is 950kg
The trailer load limit is 1700kg
My car towing limit is 3500kg
My car weighs 2055kg

My car can safely tow the weight thank you.
This has been verified by my local trailer centre and our very own ROG

Please don't suggest that I would put the safety and well being of my horses at risk.

My friend and I have just gone halves on an 18hh Hanoverian he is so good at dressage in my opinion so I am dying to get him out there to see if it is as true as everyone says. Can we get him in an ifor 510/511 or do we need a box? He is medium build he isn't wide. Love some advice on this from as many as possible.
I Have an 18.2 ...I hired an ifor Williams 511 so I could try before I buy...he reluctantly went in to go to the Beach...but it was a struggle on our return...I don't think he liked it At all...I would never of dared take him out alone...but when I take him in a 3.5 ton wagon he goes straight in...I was looking at an Equi trek as think they may be bigger...you may be better hiring a trailer first...
