Can you get this kind of horse for this kind of money?

Posting on behalf of a friend who has a maximum budget of £4,000 and is wondering whether she can find a horse to fit the following:
14.2 to 15.2
mare or gelding
any breed but more light weight than medium/heavy weight
6 to 12 years old
to compete in affilliated dressage prelim/novice but with a chance of doing elementary at some point
ideally with a bit of a competition record, nice paces and a reasonable temperament so that it doesn't try to kill her or throw in the towel at every show!
also needs to be able to hack, ideally alone and in company

Is this too much to ask? She's a competent rider (stage 3) works as a groom and has broken and ridden all sorts of horses, just wants to take her flatwork up a level now.

If she's willing for something on the smaller end of the scale, then yes, definintly. Most/all horses could compete well at elemetary with a bit of schooling.

She could easily find a ex-PC pony who's been outgrown - they'd know all about showing and competitions.

She could get a decent large RC type horse for that too.

I think she would struggle however if she wants something that's already schooled and ready to go out competeing.

Lol! I was just going to say the exact opposite

. Maybe the market has changed in the few years I've been away from the UK, but when I was selling horses, it was the 14.2's which were far more sought after and spendy than the 15.2hh's. Actually I used to find it very difficult to sell 15.2hh's and 13.2hh's - 14.2hh's were easy though

I would imagine 4K should buy what your friend is looking for within the height bracket she is looking at.

We've just had exactly that sort in, for within the price range but unfortunately for your friend he has been sold. They are out there though!

yes al;though shes more likely to get a nicer one if it needs to be brought on.
she sounds very capable so if i was her i would go for one that needs bringing on-better value for money!

Thanks, that all sounds very positive, I'll let her know.

She is quite keen on something to bring on and I think she'd do a good job. Personally I think she'd be better off with something that's been round once before and is quite forward going so she can learn a bit herself as there is quite a knack to working with energetic horses and learning about balance for lateral movements. Will be fun looking!
