Can You Handle....

.......a horse related accident,for example cast horses,cuts and wounds and so on....do you just get on and deal with it while waiting for the vet or do you just panic! I have had every kind of accident thrown at me,from punture wounds,busted eyelids(not very plesent that one!

)horses that could not move due to lameness.....and I just get on and deal with it,also is your first aid box fully equipped,as so surprised at the amount of people that don't even have the most basic of bits in their box....I think this is so essential given that horses are classed high risk!

Of course...but I'm not keen on sorting out the PTS aspect for other people's horses....

Yes i'd like to think so.Come across a few things from cast to colic to holding while pts to gushing cuts to choke to watching post mortems.

Yes, I can deal with most things and do have a first aid kit for horses (and people) in the tackroom.

Yes absolutely. Also am happy to handle horses that are to be PTS - after the amount of horses I have witnessed died it would be odd for me to be affected anymore - which prob sounds strange to others!

In all seriousness i have delt with most things well from minor cuts and wounds to all sorts of horrors like a severed artery and a horse that staked itself on a fence post.

The only thing that i found hard to deal with in my time was an accident on the road, a run away horse was hit by a car (or perhaps more accurately the car was hit by the horse??). I'll never forget looking down to the tarmack and seeing a lump of flesh, complete with grey coat on one side.

the most gory thing ive done is helping a vet with castrating, holding the blades and clamps etc... if my daughter gets a cut i pass her to the nearest person (someone i know obviously) im not that good with stuff lke this, but if i HAD to i would, would do anything for my boys or anyones horses in fact.

depends on the situation but generally just get on with it as generally if I don't no one else will!

Worst i have had to deal with is a bad colic but have also sorted choke and various lamenesses caused by puncture wounds (stupid nails!) to tendons. Old hand with horses getting cast now as Dan is a specialist but admittedly in an odd way. He is 17h2 and has NEVER got cast in his stable but unless supervised when in the indoor school he will without fail get cast as apparently the best place to roll is within about a metre of the wall and of course roll towards the wall not away! stupid horse

Thankfully never had to personally deal with a horse being PTS but have been around at yard when one was, not pleasent but wouldn't be afraid if the situation warranted it to ask the vet to do so and be there for the horse.

Yes, 100%, horses...and every other animal on the farm, I've always been taught to keep emotions and animals seperate for as long as possible.

Yes and Yes. I used to be a veterinary nurse and had to put animals to sleep myself.

My answer virtually copies Weezy's, I'd be pretty useless if I couldn't deal with things seeing as I'm on my own most of the time. You just grit your teeth and get on with it, no use having a hissy fit, that won't help.

well when i was very young my pony got cast in his stable and i didnt cope very well i burst into hysterical tears and screamed at my brother to get my mum...pony was ok. but now that imolder i am fine with things like that i keep calm and im not the kind of person that faints at the sight of blood or anything.

Yes..I'm often the one called in an emergency among friends. I get an incredible calm come over me in stressful situations. I can ignore hysterical people and have a calming influence over people and animals. It takes alot to shock me too.

I just get on and deal with it. I may ring my farrier, my slaughterman or the vet for advice but all the first line emergency stuff I have to handle. I've never had a horse pts yet but have had to do plenty of sheep and pigs!

Like honeypots I'm often the person called because I'm good at cool and calm, especially in other people's panics.

I'm pretty good in am emergency - have coped with colic, castings and the worse was when YMs little mare severed her fetlock and the artery there. I just switch into a different mode and get on with it - then afterwards it will hit me!

Yes,
I have held 4 horses to be PTS by injection and bullet.I also had to splint and sort out a horse that broke its leg on a xc course whilst waiting for the vet. I am also happy to give injections.
The worst accident I have had to deal with was at christmas and I was left on my own, horse in the field shattered its cannon and splint bones to such an extent they bones were sticking through the skin and the lower leg was facing the wrong way round.

Yes. I sort of go into automatic pilot mode. It's only after the event that I take stock of what's happened.

I would panic inside if it was something serious especially if I haven't delt with it before.
But I do not have a very flappable personality and can deal with the majority of things head on in a calm manner even if I am not calm inside.

I'm not too good dealing with my own when they're injured, for some bizarre reason, but can deal with other people's horses no problem! Having said that, I do deal with whatever comes up I just get more upset when it's mine. I think getting on with it is just another skill you pick up over the years...

I've never had to deal with anything serious yet, and hope I never will, but generally in a crisis I'm the one who just gets on and deals with things, there's nothing else you can do
