Can you have assessments carried out?

My friend is in her first season showing her mare at county level in novice/lightweight hunter. They've had varied results including firsts, being in and out of the ribbons.

At Bakewell the other day they had their worst result coming 10th out of 14 so she asked the judge if she could give her any pointers and judge said 'No, I'm too busy' I know judges are on a tight schedule but feedback would be good.

Is there anywhere she could take her mare for an assessment by a hunter producer/judge in The Lancs/Cheshire area?

That was poor practice. Most judges are happy to give feedback. If your friend has been in the ribbons sometimes, I think she should just put this down to experience and make sure that she avoids this grumpy judge in future.

Am in the wrong area to help you but I have a horse with a producer and they will assess horses for people and they will be very fair about whether it is potentially top class, what work it needs or whether it is say not true to type. As other poster has said, try to find a judge or producer (look in the association's rule book) in your area and give them a ring. A word of warning depending on the association's rules (I don't know the hunter rules, I do show hack and cob classes) you may then not be able to show under that person and obviously you won't be able to if you have help or lessons from them. You will sometimes just find a judge who doesn't like your type of horse, my old riding horse a few years back was champion out of four in hand riding horse classes and then next week wasn't even placed and that was purely in hand so not even judged on the ride just the conformation.

Thanks every one. There are a few judges in Cheshire/Derbyshire so may be worth asking them.
