I am looking for a coloured cob, pref M/H weight...pref 4yrs old and older,, calm temperament, to do mainly hacking . pleasure rides and trec...do you think i can find one!! Am sooo frustrated...i remember when people couldnt give them away! now i cant even find a youngster for much under 2k..whats going on...even horses with bad conformation are reaching lots of money...can anyone help me please...have tried admag, ad trader, adhorse, horsemart,h&h,horsequest..to name a few!..does anyone know a breeder that needs to make room for foals that wants a good home for a youngster upto 14yrs with other horses??? or am i just dreaming..

can you not go for a plain cob? tbh unless you lan to show having a coloured cob or a normal colour won't make much difference. A good horse is never a bad colour.

Coloured cobs seem to be uber expenso at the moment, and calm happy hackers also sell for loads. If you can find something you can compromise on (for example, colour, age) it might open your options up a bit. Make a list of everything you're horsey MUST have/be, and then the things it would ideally have/be to give you an idea of where you might find a compromise.

Coloured cobs are going for ridiculous prices at the moment, perhaps find yourself a cob that isn't a coloured as you will not be paying so much for a 'plain' coloured horse

Katy is right. Colour wont make a difference and tbh coloured cobs are going for a stupid price atm as they are so fashionable. Try to widen your search criteria and you will prob. getting what you want. Termperament and manners is so much better than looks.

dont get me wrong. a solid colour is fine but cobby and hairy a must...my daughter has a thing for them...lol..

why not go for a fell or something? Or a bay cob with white feathers, IMO can do just as well, if not better, at showing and look much smarter! (and not as common

thing is im not being overly fussy...age 3/4 to 14..thats 10 years to play with...14hh to 15.2 another big gap..gelding or mare...the only stipulations are calm temperment..chunky and hairy..lol...still cant find anything....

I know someone who's selling one very cheap over here, they aren't asking much at all and sounds right for what you're looking for

I'd recommend you contact a Fell or Dales breeder, and see if you can get a youngster. They may know of something calm, well bred (temperament wise) which just isnt up to show quality?
Perhaps have a look at the Fell or dales breeding website and contact a breeder near to you and speak to them. they'll be able to tell you all about the breed and show you what they have. if they havent anything they'll know of someone who has

You could always try auctions but buyer beware. You do hear some horror stories but there can be successes too.
We got our coloured cob for 1700 plus 99 in fees, £65? vetting fees and the £200 plus it cost to transport him home but only because we hadn't got a box/trailer and didn't arrange one prior to auction.
We got him at Leominster at the end of Sept last year.
He was described as 6 yr gelding 14.2 a genuine 6 yr old with lovely flowing paces. Very kind temp, broken this summer and going very well and good in all ways.
He is green in schooling and does need work but is very relaxed and does have a gorgeous trot it flows. He did need work with feet when we got him and used to rear when his around his near fore. By work I mean reassuring when we picked out etc as his feet are in ace nick and is now unshod. However soon cured that and after a dodgy start with farrier, rearing etc needed to be twitched he has been fine the next 2 times with a bucket of feed and will even lift his feet for you before you ask when cleaning them out.
At the same sale a bay cob from the same vendor, 15hh very chunky fetched 1750.
There were a few from a local riding school to me based in Trentham.
I didn't know the horses but they did look nice.
Molly A 8 yr 15h piebald cob mare. Been used for novices. Hacks out alone and company. Quiet to ride and brilliant driver. She fetched 2,500
Magpie ( was very nice this one) looked a showy type. 4 yr old piebald g, 15h. Confidence giver, perfect hack for anyone. Has done RDA work. safe to drive. He fetched 2,800
Barnaby, bay g. 7 14.2 cob, has hunted and big jump across country and show. Fetched 2,000
4 year old welsh bred cob section D g, had pedigree in cat too. Broken in spring, brought on quietly. Successful in show ring. Fetched 1.950.
Bertie piebald g age 7 14h
Steady chap has done RDA super driver, fetched 1,750.

A lovely mare not from school, was a 7 year pb mare 15 with 4 week old black colt at foot. Quiet, not broken etc fetched 2,100.

A mare we bid for but lost

was Magic a piebald mare, 9 years 15h. Smart trad cob, quiet to ride, safe and steady. Snaffle mouth. Done pc, fun rides, exc hunter. Goes 1st or last, alone or in company. Jumps small fences. Good to catch, box, shoe, and in traffic. Has bred a foal as a 4 year old. Vacs too.
She was a really nice mare we asked loads of questions about her and she was only up for sale as rider was moving to a more forward type. Seller seemed really genuine with it too and she was a pretty cob too. She fetched £2,300 or 2,320 ( can't read my scribble on cat lol). On horsemart etc she would have fetched much more than that of that I am positive having done 12 months research on buying a horse perusing mags, papers and the internet.
Anyway that is just a selection of what was there that day. So if you are after a cheap cob or native type do consider auctions. The one's with pre cats and vetting facilities or warranted sections are best. At leominster they ask if you want a vetting after hammer has gone down and we bought ours on that condition. If he had failed we would have had the choice to say yes or no, or negotiate.
Good luck

ps btw where about are you? if I see any possibles could always pm you or send you the links to websites etc

Someone I know has just bought a big hairy cob from a Riding School. Think she paid £3500 incl all tack and rugs. Why not have a ring round and see if any of your local ones have any?

I know someone selling a coloured show cob who is a really nice type, great temp, lovely ride, great hacking, does dressage and showjumping and has done really well showing (has been in top 4 in Dublin last 2 years and is up in Balmoral this week) but is absolutely ridiculous money! Not very helpful I'm afraid but they are expensive over here aswell!!
