WARWICKSHIRE POLICE WATCH SCHEMES Warwickshire Police - 01926 684385 Fax - 01926 684384 Email watch@warwickshire.police.ukMESSAGE .................HW WK Help required to find a home for Red

This message has been forwarded by a colleague in West Midlands Police:

Red is a 11 yr old, 16.1hh, ID x TB. He has had a career of pure dressage, competing up to elementary level until he was 9 before spending the last two years competing Para dressage with a 13 yr old girl, taking her to the internationals, summer 2010.

However Red has recently been diagnosed with untreatable arthritis in both his back hocks and problems in the lumbar region of his back. The vet has advised Red be retired as he can no longer be ridden.

His current owners are considering having him put to sleep, as he now can’t do what they want.

Red would make a brilliant companion horse; he can be turned out with mares or geldings. As a 3 yr old he was the ‘babysitter’ for a 6-month-old filly who was being weaned and he was an angel with her. He would quite happily while away the hours munching in a field with a friend and wouldn’t ask for much but a bit of love and attention.

Is there anybody who could help? I can’t bare to see such a loving horse put to sleep just because he can’t do what his owners want anymore.

If you feel you can help please cll the below mobile number.

i feel so terrible. i wouldnt have him soley because he is unrideable, that makes me such a bad person doesnt it? i hope you find a home for him, i will mention it to all my horsey friends.

Aaaaaarrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh:mad:

Far better to pass the problem onto someone else and condemn him to an uncertain future then......

sorry. :( its just there would be no point taking on a horse with big medical problems that i wouldnt be able to take my riding further on. i would love to but its hard enough convincing my OH on a perfectly healthy horse. im sure someone else would have him. :(:(

Not disagreeing with you at all SNLH - it's this type of thread that drives me mad. Your reaction is exactly the point! There are masses of unwanted horses about at the moment that are sane, sound and healthy - why on earth would anyone want to take a lame horse on as a companion when they could have a hardy, rideable native pony instead?!!

The owners are sensible to consider putting the horse down instead of passing him on, he could well end up being passed about from home to home - hardly the way to reward a horse that has obviously given so much pleasure in the past! I do realise that the person putting out the plea has the best of intentions - I just feel that these aren't always what is best for the horse in question.:(

oh i thought you were having a go at me! dont get me wrong if i could afford it and thought i could do right by him i would have called them up straight away, but convincing OH would be impossible. my friend offered me an ex racer for free when we moved here and he said no point blank because it had a dropped back and *could* possibly in the far future have back issues... see what im dealing with!

^^ This ^^

The horse has obviously worked hard for his rider and if the owners can't keep him during his retirement (as many people are not), then they are doing the right thing in considering PTS. At least his future is secure that way, and better to be PTS than to be passed around. At best he will be moved around to different homes when people realise a big, lame horse isn't the ideal companion. At worst he may end up with someone unscrupulous who gives him pain killers and continues to ride/school him - the horse doesn't deserve that.

This remark is not aimed at any one on this forum, just to do with the 'theme' of passing on unrideable horses.

Using this poor fella as an example, he has worked hard all his young life, took a 13 yr old girl to international competitions and now (possibly because he worked so hard, he is only 11 after all) he can no longer work, so he is potentially passed on so they don't have to deal with the problem.

This is something that happens all too often and in my opinion is unacceptable. If he will be quite happy staying out in the field keeping another horse company, then why can't the owners keep him as company for their next victim, sorry, I mean horse? As I presume they will be getting another. If that is not an option, then please don't give the problem to some poor sap who goes all doggy eyed at the sight of a poor lame horse that nobody wants (ie, me).

I think the owners are making a hard, but ultimately a good decision for the horse.

Couldnt agree more; so much suffering amongst animals at the moment, horses included where they're unrideable, unaffordable and purely no longer wanted. The unscrupulous will make money out of these types of animals, even if it's just to send them on journies to a meat factory for some £'s. -who knows may even get exported live? We play 'god' bringing them into this existence, so perhaps we should take responsibility and see them out with kindness where we can.

Sounds like a sensible (if damned annoying) OH - have a hunt round - you'll find a lovely free, or next to nothing, beastie that is sound, healthy and will do you proud.

When you find him or her - post a pic!!:D

I'm inclined to agree with the fact that the horse shouldn't be passed around and would be kinder to put him to sleep rather than send him to comlete strangers.

On the other hand I've posted it on here as it's clear someone is trying to help the poor boy and we must all do our bit.

Personally if it were me and he'd worked so hard I'd keep him and let him see his days out in peace.

So would I topdollar, and if I couldn't keep him in retirement I would have him PTS at least you would know where he was.

Topdollar....would let owners go that route, far less unsettling for the horse, who knows how much pain he may already be in or start enduring, better a future that is known...than one where he could fall into the wrong hands.

I do get a bit fed up of people feeling they are saving such animals when given the choice, most humans would prefer to go quickly than suffer in the end!
