Ok, here's my situation. I have a young mare who's been diagnosed with wobblers as a result of a fall. Had very correct paces and sound temperament and vets have assured me there's no risk in breeding from her. She had injections into the joints and I am finally seeing some improvement (but very unlikely that she will come right for more than hacking).
I can put the mare in foal to a sj stallion (free covering) but would probably not want to keep the foal. Mare's breeders have offered swap the mare for a yearling with similar breeding, not as nice as the mare and not as nice as the foal the mare would have.
If it wasn't for the recession, I would definitely breed but I'm worried about the job and being stuck with another horse next year if I can't sell the foal.
However, I would not want to keep the yearling either, so I'd have to get him sold.
And while I would breed a second foal from the mare for me to keep, I would not want to keep breeding but would be worried about selling the mare...
This has been going on for ages and I keep changing my mind so any advice would be greatly appreciated....

gosh that sounds a nightmare poor you! why do you want to breed - doesnt sound like you want a foal or a yearling and cost you more money. why not focus on getting the mare right and loan her as a hack if she doesnt and you want something you can ride, thats what i have just done. or retire her, field livery can be very cheap.

good luck.

I def would not breed if you cannot gaurantee a home for life for the foals. There are too many unwanted horses and ponies out there.

I agree with the previous post, concentrate on getting your mare well enough for hacking and then loan her if you do not want to hack.

If I have understood correctly you would like to breed a 2nd foal by a stallion you like and keep that baby?

If so I would do that and forget the free covering. No point breeding something you don't want just cos its free. Equally the yearling sounds like a pointless swap.

I would breed the one you want and then when its weaned make a decision on the mare. She may be sound by then at least to sell as a hack, if not then as a proven broodmare.

i wouldnt breed from her if you dont want the babies, i would do as others have said and see hows she comes on and loan her as a hack

gd luck

If you're not into breeding why not swap the mare for the yearling and then sell the yearling and use the money from this to buy yourself a nice riding horse?

i'd go with what oldmare said and breed from a stallion of your choice...then keep the foal for yourself and then maybe loan the mare out as a broodmare if she's thrown something nice out...

Under no circumstances should you breed a foal that you don't want.
if you do want to breed, then choose the most suitable stallion, but bear in mind, the foal might not be up to much, or it might be the best foal in the world!!
