I am not even sure if this is allowed. Hopefully admin won't delete so I shall try anyway.

I follow a young man call Niall Harbison. He is from Dublin and is an alcohol and drug user who has been in long term recovery for sometime now. Since almost losing his life in hospital with damage from is former lifestyle he has turned his life around and he has devoted his life to saving street dogs from horrendous conditions in Thailand where he now lives. If you follow the link you can see the work he is doing, very successfully and is hoping to take his charity one step further and possibly also take the framework for his charity to other countries that also have many street dogs in need of help.

Today he is trying to do a 30 mile marathon, his health is not good and he has only been training for 30 days, to say this is a huge ask and risk is a huge understatement. Despite reassurances from people that they will still donate and support him if he does not complete the marathon he has insisted on trying his best.

Please no negative comments, if you do not approve please just pass on by, however if anyone wants to know more or feels that could even donate a very small sum it would be great. Thanks for reading and I truly hope he does not injury himself doing this marathon as those dogs really need him as you will see when you read some of the many successful rescues they have achieved.

I have neither instagram or twitter, any other way to donate….just a small amount, perhaps bank transfer to yourself and you can forward….
You did say when I rejoined that you reckoned you knew who I was….but perhaps a pm with your details….

Thank you so much Marshpiper, I am only able to donate a small amount myself from time to time, but I hope by sharing it might help generate a bit more support. I just hope he is Ok doing the marathon in Bangkok today, he really isn't too well himself sadly., very brave and determined young man really paying back over and beyond.

Totally agree, hit the problem at the source. Its a very ambitious undertaking but the more the idea grows the less the problem should perpetuate, in theory anyway.

I have a friend who has 4 dogs from various foreign countries, all 'rescues'. It drives me mad, she also supports an organisation in Cyprus that sends dogs here. I try not to discuss it with her, although I'm happy to hear about her day to day doings with the dogs. Some of the stories about what happens after the dogs are removed from the street, before they are sent to their new owner are toe-curling! 24 dogs all in 1 flat!
So I was happy to make a small donation to this scheme. I hope he does manage to spread the idea around the world.
 
A few years ago 3/4 I decided that if a charity, any charity had a chief executive or any head office staff that were being paid a six figure sum or over, I would no longer donate to them, maybe this sounds harsh, mean or whatever, but I just felt if the charity could pay that and I investigated one, where not only was the CE being paid that type of salary, but they also had a company car and expenses….
So now with my meagre fixed income I still donate but just small sums, to those I feel need my help, just wish I could give them more….
I await being told off😟

What an incredible man turning his life around like that and embracing such a huge problem with street dogs in Asia. The work must be heart-breaking aswell as so rewarding.
Just been reading his substack etc and it’s great he’s gaining so much support and momentum for his mission…even political support!
It’s nice to know of charities to support that are dedicated grassroots organisations really doing the work…I much prefer donating to them. Thanks Mrs J for letting us know about Niall’s work.

When my OH went to Nepal he told me about the street animals…the stray dogs were very high numbers, not in great condition. A neutering program is essential for countries with such a vast problem.

Good luck to him with the marathon run!

If they dont pay people salaries like that they will have no senior staff. These are people who can earn substantially more in industry. Most take an enormous pay cut to work for a charity, but no one is going to work for 30k when they can earn 300k elsewhere.

I am certainly not asking them to work for 30k as you put it, or even a massive pay cut, I am searching how to put this, but surely anyone going to work in a higher position for a charity should not want or expect an industry type pay amount…it’s a charity….

Exactly, so go and read what I said again. They do take substantial pay cuts to do it. But theres a cut off point where its not feasible. Are you working full time for a charity for free? If you arent then you really are in no position to criticise people at higher levels taking a substantial pay cut to work for charities just because they earn more than you think is ok.
 
When my daughter first qualified as a vet, she and another new grad volunteered at an overseas animal charity mainly carrying out neutering on cats and dogs. It was pretty basic facilities but I thought it was an excellent idea, advantageous to both them and the charity. Before she went she contacted a lot of local vets asking for donations of various stuff , including needles and scalpels, she had a letter from the charity explaining why she was carrying them !

My niece is a vet nurse and lives out in Thailand working for a charity. She did it for nothing for 3 years, coming back here to work for 6 months then 6 months there. She has just been offered a job, small pay but enough to live on. I’m so pleased for her.
 
Niall is doing such a great job.

I discovered the APS last year when in Samoa which do similar for the animals there. Vets from, mostly, NZ and Oz go and work there for board and lodging for 6 months.
The friends we stayed with have 6 guard dogs and they pay for treatment plus give extra to enable the charity to castrate and spay animals for free. I now donate as have seen what a difference they make to animals on the island. Many of the dogs kept are for security as crime is rife.
 
I follow him on Threads. It's wonderful to see the ongoing stories and photographs of some of the dogs he rescues. Some of them are barely alive at the start. The guy has the biggest heart of anyone I can think of.
