CAN YOU HELP?

ARE YOU FREE ON SATURDAY 23RD AND SUNDAY 24TH NOVEMBER?

WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN SOME NEW RESEARCH?

GOT A HORSE THAT CAN JUMP 2FT6 AND IS OVER 14HH2?

THEN YOU CAN DEFINATLY HELP ME!

My name is Freya Hogan and I am a final year student at the University Of Lincoln studying Equine Sports Science.

For my final project I am investigating “The Effect Of Different School Surfaces On The Take Off A Landing Points In The Jumping Horse.”

I am looking for 3 or 4 more riders (Though the more the better!) to come to some yards on the days mentioned above and give me a hand. All you would have to do would be to canter over a fence 5 times whilst I film you and measure the ground.

Sound simple? Then get involved!

Saturday 23rd November at 2:30pm at BILLZ EQUESTRIAN in Chobham.
AND
Sunday 24th November at 10am at PARWOOD then to WEYBRIDGE EQUESTRIAN CENTRE.

If you can help feel free to email me at freya@4xtra.com.

Unfortunately at the moment I can't provide transport so riders need to be able to get to the venues, so if you have a box and are willing to share give me a shout and I may try and pair you up with someone.

I'M PROVIDING FOOD :)

Thanks for you help everyone!

What seems to have happened is that when I copied this out of the word document it removed some of the spaces, I'm so sorry if that upset you. And for future information to anyone who reads this I am dyslexia and trying to get a decent degree despite it.

Word has spell check. Use it. That text is full of typos - not just missing spaces. Dyslexia is not an excuse for misspellings in "scientific" dissertations.

Yes I did change some of them. I did not notice them before so I thought that seeing as people had pointed them out I should fix it.

Yes I did change some of the issues. But I do have a question for you, is it needed for you to be quite so rude? You could have just pointed out the errors and I would have fixed them. I am sorry if my lack of spelling ability offends you. And I looked at my word document again and for some reason research was not underlined.

No one was rude, it was very badly written and you had obviously seen all the mistakes as you fixed it so quickly....if you want people to take you seriously then what you write has to look better than it did...

This. And definitely is not spelt definatly. Please don't shout, it's poor forum etiquette. Capitalising random words is ugly. Your dissertation title doesn't make sense. It is generally quite poorly written in that it is unclear whether you expect people to come to multiple yards on both days, or a single yard on one day. The final line also doesn't make sense. Happy?

Thank you for you support here Pinkvboots I'm not completely sure why this has become quite so dramatic quite so quickly.
JFTD I am attempting to change the final spelling issue but as this was my first post on this site I am having a little trouble finding out how to edit my post.
And I do have to say this but if you had nothing polite to say about me or my work why did you comment? I do believe that my final sentence makes sense and I'm not actually that bothered if you think capitalising random words was ugly, those where the words that needed to get peoples' attention.
Again I am sorry if somehow my post offended you but I would prefer it if from not on you refrained from posting on my thread. Thank you.

Firstly, I responded because I feel that people should be made aware of errors in posts like this - you'll see that there are a great many posts asking people to participate in equine research on here, and they are always greeted with a critical response when they are riddled with errors - because you need to know before you submit this sort of stuff.

Secondly, your final sentence reads "Thanks for you help everyone". Clearly you mean "your" not "you". As it stands, it does not make sense.

Thirdly, you can only edit posts for a limited time after submission.

Finally (and I'll gloss over your typos in that line too), you can't ask people direct questions and expect them not to respond. Also, it's an open forum, people can respond as they please - even if you don't like it. Now, I've saturated my interest in this post and I think I have made your typographic errors clear for future reference. I hope this post clarifies your issues with how this forum works with regard to editing, if nothing else.

I think people can comment where they like, you posted this and you can't censor the replies, that's not how it works....also can't help myself from saying that your writing seems to have improved drastically since you first posted in a very short space of time, glad to have helped !!

There were spelling mistakes that for some reason my spellchecker did not bring to my attention, I thank people for informing me of this. I also do not mind criticism of my project.
I do have a question that people can reply to if they chose or as I have been reminded of this is an open forum so they are free to ignore.
What did not make sense in my proposed title? If this is not clear then I clearly need to fix this as soon as possible.

Thank you for the reply about editing.
But this has become rather dramatic hasn't it?

I think everyone is being very harsh over spelling mistakes. She is asking for help very politely and you should support not cut her down. I am sure her dissertation tutor will have agreed to her subject, do you think you are better than a university lecturer who does this for a living? Also on a side note though I agree with free speech I know many forums that have been closed down due to unnecessary bitchiness- again I agree with saying there was spelling mistakes however there is no need to keep repeating and going round in circles.

"The Effect Of Different School Surfaces On The Take Off A Landing Points In The Jumping Horse."

The "A" should presumably read "and".

And nope, I don't think it's dramatic at all. Nobody's been mean or unfair, you've just had a few comments you might not like. It happens on here - we've all had comments we don't much like reading.

BTW, you may have more success posting in the regional boards of the forum.

This was about putting 'a' rather than 'and' by accident? I actually thought it was something serious that I had done wrong.
This will be my final comment on the subject. Just because you have perhaps had some negative replies doesn't give you the right to talk to people in the same fashion.
Thank you for being so welcoming on my first day using this forum.

Sorry I can't help frellie but the result will be interesting to read.

I'd ignore the people who've set themselves up to mark your dissertation for you before you've even written it :D

Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors on a forum don't, as far as I know have any impact on the mark your tutor will award for your work. I thought your post made you sound really nice and your project really interesting.

Dont worry and welcome certain, people get above themselves sometimes and think nobody else has an opinion!!!
Its a lot easier to ignore something if all you are going to do is criticize so grow up you have been on here a lot longer!

welcome frellie! This thread epitomises why I won't go on a livery yard! I don't know if you deleted the bit where you've asked for feed back on your spelling in the ad but I can't see it! ;-) Good luck founding some volunteers. I would have been keen but I'm a bit far away. Do you have a hypothesis as yet? I'd be interested to see the results of your study.

The more I read this thread the crosser I feel. I do really think that a lack of emotional intelligence is more of a hinderence in life than poor spelling. As others have said there is spell check out there but clearly some people need to also turn on their 'tactful & polite' check too.

Firstly, welcome Frellie! I am very interested in hearing the outcome of your project, though I can't participate due to me being very far away!
People criticising - I don't think it was the fact you were pointing out errors; done nicely that would be very helpful but I think it was the way you said it...it came across rather rude, whether you meant it that way or not!

This.

Welcome to the forum Frellie. Unfortunately I live too far away to help out, but I hope you get the help that you need.

I am appalled at some of the comments on this thread, there really is no need.

I cannot help with the research, however having suffered through writing a dissertation, I will say this: do not trust your tutor to point out errors! Yes, many tutors are excellent. Sadly, some are not, and a few will allow their students to utterly embarrass themselves without advising :( I know of one person who was told repeatedly that their work was excellent, only to be marked down by the same tutor when it came to handing in!

Spellcheck is really not reliable enough for a dissertation, especially if you have dyslexia. I suggest you invest in a proof reading service :) Your university or college may have details on a reliable one used to working with your field of research. Ask in the library or student guidance department. Are you receiving enough support with your dyslexia whilst on your course of study? My husband was allocated a support officer, and this really helped him. Do not be shy of asking for help of this type!

In addition, be careful of your referencing and bibliography. These are very important :) Good luck with your project, and I hope your test riders and horses all have a clear round!

Perhaps some of the posters have been rather terse in their posts, but I'm afraid that it will give you a taste of life outside the cocoon of education!

I admire you for working hard and studying for your degree, but I think that you need to accept that your initial post was quite muddling to read, and is still not as clear as it might be. Take full advantage of the uni support systems to proof read material so that you are sure that it means what you think it means! When you are out in the real world, I'm afraid that you will be judged as careless and less than bright if your written communications are littered with errors, so you need to be thinking of how you will cope then. A literate friend or relative that you can co-opt would be very useful!

Btw, I know some very bright dyslexics, and it need not be a barrier to getting a very good job, but you must learn how to live with it. Good luck.

Can I translate for people finding her post hard to understand? She wants people who can get themselves to one of three specified equestrian centres on a specified day who are prepared to be filmed jumping a small jump, with the objective of measuring where the horse takes off and lands.

I'm being a bit thick, obviously, but I cannot see where she asks for a critique of her writing, or advice on how to manage her life after college.

Totally agree!
