Can you just change vets?

I am SO angry (again) with my vets. They have irritated me twice in the past year, over the same horse. I now wont deal with one vet, and am just about to loose my temper with another.

I was wondering if you could just change vets? I have been with the current ones for 15 years :(

Course you can, I use two practices, depending on what I need doing or who's on duty etc

Your horse, your money at the end of the day, however if they are good vets (which I presume they are if you have used them for so long) maybe its a case of taking a few deep breaths and biting your tongue, I'd rather a vet treat my horse who knows my horses full history etc, however a I suppose a fresh pair of eyes can also be a good thing. :)

As far as I know you can change vets whenever you want to, the new vets will just go to your old vets and ask for the horses medical records. However, it is probably politic to speak to your old vets and explain that you are moving vets because of whatever has happened just in case you ever need them again for any reason! If you do change though try and get some recommendations from other people about the new vets because you might be going out of the frying pan into the fire so to speak! Good luck.

As Kenzo said, you money, your choice!
I am really lucky with my vets, the only gripe I have is they use an out of hours service as there are only two vets at the practice.
If I need a vet out of hours I go to another practice who uses their own vets for out of hours, but I use them for the duration of care for that animal, so I get continuaty of care.

I switched Vets are a major falling out (I threathened to sue him!) however I didn't cite my problems as a reason for change because I didn't want the new vets to have any prejudices against me. I just told them I had changed as everybody most people on the yard had them and that way I could save money on call outs etc.

I only wanted the best for my horse and the old vet wasn't giving him the best treatment. Like everyone else has said its your money and your horse!

Yes you can, and quite easily. Our yard changed as the vets we normally have kept getting various locums and changing them every few weeks (as it worked out cheaper for the practice than paying a full time equine vet!!!) Well it meant a new vet every time you had a call out and various vets misdiagnosing very important things, resulting in a couple of ponies being pts that could have been saved very easily!!

I use two different vets practises depending on what I'm having done, anything more serious I use the more expensive vets but routine vaccinations, simple castrations, etc I would have done by my cheaper vet. Works out fine for me.

Of course you can. At the end of the day your only paying for a service arent you. You wouldnt think twice about going in to a new tack shop.

I use two vets. One for vaccinatations etc coz the call out is cheaper but if I have an emergency I use another vets, mainly because I trust two of the equine vets there and would rather pay more and be happier with the diagnoses.

it wasn't the thing to do in the old days when vets were more traditional, like doctors, but times have changed- we now deal with 2 vets, depending on the circumstances.
