Getting our 9 week old puppy tonight and this weekend we have to go in the car a couple of times each day. Can you over travel a puppy, will it be dangerous?

Thanks

It's not about over travelling him, it's about giving your new puppy a chance to settle in his new home and by picking him up tonight and then taking him in the car several times over the next 2 dyas is far from ideal, young puppies tend to be car sick, you are setting yourself up for a dehydrated and sick puppy. Especially if the weather is warm.

Give him a break, stay at home. Do you both really HAVE to go out ?

I wouldn't say it was dangerous, although our new puppy hated travelling home in the car! I also think it would help if he could stay at home and get used to his new home, I think staying home would help him settle. (I am no expert :) this is just my personal opinion)

Also are the journeys long? would the dog be able to get out and stretch its legs at the end? what about vaccinations? hmm if it were me Id prob postpone getting him till Monday.

Having said that, I'm probably soft :)

pictures of new puppy please :) xx

I totally understand what you both mean, it's really difficult as the journeys do have to be done, we're taking him home tonight at about 6 and then the first journey will be tomorrow about 3pm.. for about 30 minutes..

Also picking him up Monday is not an option as he is last in the litter to leave and breeders are off on holiday saturday!

Will have to see what strings I can pull and leave him with someone at home:)

Thanks xx

ps) have no idea how to post photo's..

Why don't you just leave him at home? You are not going to be with him 24/7 for the rest of his life I presume and it doesn't do any harm leaving a new pup for a short while each day as soon as you get him. In fact it is better to do that than be with him all the time then it comes as a huge shock when he is left alone.

Agree with MurphysMinder.... Get a crate, Radio 2 and leave pup at home.
My car howled all the way home, and was quite unsettled for her first few journeys. In the end I resorted to putting her in a large catbox in the front seat and going round the block feeding treats through the bars... Didn't take her long to migrate to the boot :-)
My brothers puppy was very traumatised by her new home and was very frightened. Trips in the car would have been too much for her.
It really depends on your puppy's personality, and your not really going to know it well enough to gauge how it will cope.
I'm sure you'll be fine though

PMSL!!!

When I first read the post I thought you were worrying about nothing but as MM says, there should be no problem with leaving him at home in a crate if you think it would stress him.
My pup was very far-travelled by his old owner (a professional driver) and was always in the van with him, he was still very drooly up until about five months old.
It does depend on the dog but I suppose if he is only just home it would be a little unfair on him.

Got him home last night, he travelled amazing! Fell asleep in the foot well and stayed asleep for the whole journey- think he quite likes the vibrations of the car. Not worried at all now and will see how today goes :-)

Oh and I've seen him on a regular basis since the day he was born as his breeder lives next door to my horses! :-)

Congratulations on the new puppy! Photos????? These are obligatory you know!

So glad he travelled well and I am sure he will be fine on his own in the house for short intervals. By the way, sorry to be a pain but he would be much safer in the car either in a crate/barrier in the boot or in a crate attached to the seatbelt or later on when he is larger with a harness attached to the seatbelt. It's a good habit to get them into now because a loose dog in the car is very dangerous both for the dog and the humans.

My lot were awful in the car, always threw up just as we were getting somewhere:rolleyes: It took them about two weeks of very short journeys to stop hurling, but they were drooly til about 6 months.

Glad he was settled in the floor well.... Sounds like you'll be ok to take him with you today.
Your only risk is where he can safely go to the loo... I would advise against putting him on the floor in a public place as he won't of had his vaccinations yet.
Good luck :-D

I always travel puppies in the car from the get go, as a result I have never had a bad traveller, you do/can get the whole drooley thing like CC suggests, but generally the younger you travel them the better. IMO it will do no harm to travel a puppy so soon.
I would however contain the pup within the car as suggested in a carrier/crate and in the boot with a nice blanket and something like a nyla bone for him to chew for periods when he is not sleepy, they are non edible so no hightened chance of puke:D Always travel them on an empty tummy.
It is very important as suggested to create a routine at home for the puppy to be left to prevent you from creating seperation anxiety problems, but as to you question then no I see no harm in travelling a puppy frequently even when they have just arrived.

Sweep was travelled in the car form the day I got him at 8 weeks old - never had a problem with it and he loves being in the car - in fact both mine do and Max usually won't get out!!:D:D

When Sweep was little he did travel in a plastic crate/box as crates in cars didn't really exist then (this was 13 years ago:eek) and it meant I could put him in the footwell of the passenger side and keep my eye on him - as he was a tiny spangle he couldn't get out for a week or two so no problems there:D:D

Dylan from 10weeks (after jabs) was out with OH all morning (involves pick up truck, tractor and landy) and then spent the after noon at home. He will travel on anything and in anything and is very well behaved in the car.
Infact at 12weeks he had his first minature railway ride (at OH work).

Hes a very well socialised puppy because of it as well, nothing phases him.

My OH has the camera put I have numerous photos of him on traction engines/ fork lifts/ horse wagons and train carriages. Only downside is he is now a bit big to fit him on the traction engine :( and there is now way Ben and Dylan can fit in the forklift anymore.

Teal on the otherhand loves the car but hates the above. Hes getting used to the train carriage now though.

Thank you all for your replies, my OH was driving and i was in the passenger seat whilst the puppy was in the foot well, but will definitely get him something to travel in for future times, (he'll be going out with OH who's a farrier and will travel in a cage in the back).

He went to the vets this morning and was BRILLIANT and the vet said what a fine stamp of a dog we've chosen :D

i'm new at the whole up loading pictures, but i'll try, if it doesnt work - please bare with me! Everyone, this is Oak! (mother is called Willow, so we just figured we'll carry the tree names on..) :D

Meeps!:D:D:D

Another spangle - just what we need on here.....;):D:D:D

am i being dum but whats a spangle?

Is it the same as a sproker? because thats what he is :D ... or though, the bitch was also mated to another springer.. but the chances of him being pure bred are like 20% as we don't reckon the old boy performed... ;)

am i being dum but whats a spangle?

No your not bring dumb:D it is AAD shprthand for dogs that have spaniel in them - whether full pedigree or part spaniel they are a spangle on here:D:D:D

One of the cutest, friendliest, most loveable, over excited, friendly dogs - I would go on but I don't want owners of those not in the spangle massive to get jealous.....;):D:D:D

We picked our puppy up on Tuesday. I have travelled him every day since. Ok, so it was only to my mums which is 10mins away but he still came out with me in the car. We found, by day 2 that he loves snuggling on my slipper so I put a blanket and my slipper in a small crate and I put him in the car ( I even out the seat belt around him!). Then I put a blanket over the top of him. He cried a little bit for the first couple of days but he is fine now. We are crate training at home ( he has a bigger crate for home) and he is currently in his crate, laying on his back sound asleep with the crate door open. He took himself in there about 3 hours ago and that is where he has stayed! Good luck with your new puppy. :)

Ah i see slinkyunicorn! I like the sound of this spangle group/clique ahaha! He's such a darling, so well behaved!! First night he slept straight threw, no accidents as of yet! Just put him to bed and he's cried a little but I think (hope) he's been told by the jack russel to shut up and go to bed - as it's gOne awfully quiet!

Looking forward to day two!!
