I personally think licks are a waste of money. They are full of sugar and if your horse is a pig or rather fond of their food, they will generally find a way to chomp their way through it in next to no time.
My girl just has a salt lick and plenty of hay to keep her occupied. She is now stabled at night and I have started to give her a treat ball which she loves. I fill this with a handful of pony nuts and she loves it, keeps her occupied and there are usually still some in there in the morning. When I have the time, I will also hang up a swede for her to chomp on which she likes. This is much healthier and contains much less sugar than licks - not to mention will be much cheaper!
