I have seen a lovley little sec D filly who is currently 14.2 hh and 2 years old. I dont know the height of her parents but can you have a rough idea. Want something to mature to at least 15hh.

Thread in breeding about this. Someone said a hand at 2 and 2 hands at 1 year old. I am looking at a welsh D x who is 13.3 at 17 months. Both parents are 14.2 but I think he must end up bigger due to the size of him now. I want something between 14.2 and 15hh.

From 18 months onwards you can do the string test.

With a piece of string measure from the point of the elbow to the point of the fetlock.
Then reverse the string from the elbow to the withers, the difference is how much they have still to grow.
Not dead accurate but usually pretty close.

My cob was just about 14hh in February when I brought him and now he's 14.2hh at the withers and 14.3hh on the bum. He's now 2yrs, 5 months. I'm sure he's going to make a good 15hh.
Another way to see what they will make is to measure the point from the middle of the knee to the top of the hoof. My cobs is 15" so I think thats a good guide to go by.
