Can you pull a trailer using an automatic?

Mum used to have a Nissan terrano, but it was rubbish on big hills, a lot where I live. And a few times we even got pulled back down the hil by the box, an Ivor and a 14hh pony! Took. It to the garage time and time again but the problem still existed. And it wasn't mums towing skills, she was one of the first to go though the test, due the issues with the Nissan she though it was her but no, her driving was fine.

So when looking for my 4x4 I went for a disco, could only find a auto in price range but it is so fab I love it, plus it's in really good condition too. However I wrote it off last week, :(cried like a good 'un.
The garage says it's going to cost £4500 to repair, no engine damage at all, just the front bonnet above the bumper. (hit something taller then my disco) the car insurance have valued the disco £1500 more what I paid .
The funny thing is the garage has been very naughty adding extras that need doing ie a sticker for £75, as someone for the garage wants to buy it, do it up and sell it on. Cheeky:mad:
So I've got my own garage doing the work for £500, because I can get the parts second hand. But the point is a disco doesn't lose value, someone will always pay a good price even if it's totally broken and auto's hold their value more as us horsey folk want them.

Can't wait to get it back now :)

I can legally tow a trailer with a manual - I checked it with the DVLA, the driving instructor and exaiminer. I hold the manual car driving test so am perfectly legal to tow!
The fact that I am in NI may be part of the difference :)

I think the difference is that you're in NI and road laws differ.

I am also a driving instructor and also do B+E tuition and recently had a pupil with an auto car so rang the DSA and asked about her doing the test in her own car and the answer came back that if she did the test in an auto she would ONLY have B+E Auto entitlement regardless of whether she had the B (manual) licence however if she had a B (auto) licence and did her B+E test in a manual car it would upgrade her B (auto) licence to a B (manual) licence.

However will point out that often if I ring and speak to someone different at the DSA or indeed the DVLA I get differring answers. So personally I would take the test in a manual car and consider buying an auto car for once I've passed, I do prefer driving a manual car though so am biased in favour of manual.

You mentioned DVLA - perhaps you should have said DVANI (Driver & Vehicle Agency Northern Ireland) as the two are seperate organisations
