Hi All,

I'm looking to get our Shetland a new brown saddle and would love some suggestions on where to start.

She currently has a little black cub saddle, but my son wants to jump and the high cantle makes it a little difficult as he keeps landing on it! He also wants to do some showing so I thought I might as well go for brown and then it'll be good for everything.

I thought about getting a treeless saddle but there are so many on the market and I just don't know where to start.

Any advice is appreciated.

I think the Native Pony Saddle Company do one that comes in as small as a 12 inch. Would be considerably more expensive than a cub saddle though so I guess it depends on your budget too :)

I think the Zoe Snape pads are popular for little ones, they are smart enough to show in, are not too expensive, plus you won't need to worry about fitting other than making sure it is the correct length.

Yes it looks like I'm going to be spending the money I had saved towards a new saddle for my own horse, lol! I am currently looking at the thorowgood t4 pony club saddle or a shires hi lite (which only comes in black however) I have seen lots of people using a pad, but it just doesn't look like it would give him any support.

Just looked at the native pony club saddle company, what beautiful saddles but a bit far out of my price range. I may send them an email though and see if they have any second hand ones :)

Children really dont need the support of knee rolls or deep seat, I have taught young children to jump in very flat show saddles and they are often better balanced than having a saddle that forces them into a position or takes them a long way away from the ponies back, a cub saddle will be detrimental as it does hold them in so anything will be better for jumping that that will.

thank you be positive for your advice, I agree the cub saddle is totally rubbish for jumping in. Have you found that children moving from a cub saddle to a pad have difficulty in keeping their position at all?

I have never used a cub saddle or a pad so not much help really, I have had children here from about 3 years and all started on a normal saddle with a handle, I do a lot on the lunge to help with position and balance and find most find their own balance with a bit of help from the handle when required.
I think once they are relatively stable on top they tend to stay put fairly well, if you get the basics in place at a young age they just get on with it, it tends to be once you are older the saddle becomes more of an issue as it has to accommodate our different shapes and we become more analytical.

This is what we used.

Daughter was 3 there and riding a 32" mini with the 12" Zoe snape pad. I went for that size as I thought I might use it on the next one but in the end I didn't it was fine tho. Gave her a pretty good seat!

Incidentally, you wouldn't want to get in front of a 32" mini that jumps like a stag ;)
