As above really! Disco finally died so am trying to find a towing vehicle on a very limited budget! I've found a website that gives towing limits but not for any pre-2000. It's to tow an old ifor 505 & 400kg pony.

Thanks in advance

Oh & not a landrover!!

What about an older subaru legacy or forester ?. There are some good reasonable priced ones on a certain auction site. They are great for towing, we tow and old (heay) rice box with ours

You might look at Jeeps - they are cheap 4x4s - as long as you only use them for towing, because they don't get good mileage. Any Cherokee marque can tow what you require. Good luck!

You get a lot for your money if you look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee, you want the one with Mercedes 280 TD engine. They tow 3.5 ton. They have good hatchback that does not hit the trailer when you open it.

The big Merc Estates, tremedous value for money and capable of towing 3tons.

Hmm some good suggestions. Had a quick look on autotrader app & there's a few jeeps on there. The KIA was out of price range & some of others were coming up as petrol only (need diesel). Trouble I've got is hubby needs new work van too so I just need something to tide me over until I can afford something decent as the van has got to come first!! Budget is £2000 max. I've found a few Toyota hilux surf's in budget (love toyotas!!) but can't find towing specs on anything before 2000 (same for above suggestions too!)

Surfs are superb. Go for a 3.0l engine rather than the 2.4l version. Their tow capacity is in the 2.2-2.5 region so although not the biggest capacity, plenty for your requirement.

diahatsu fourtrak, not the prettiest vehicle lol but go on forever and tow just fine, farmer can tow 2 fully grown steers in the trailer with his no problem:)
I have a frontera and now that the air leak in the turbo is fixed it pulls like a train, pulls our caravan fully loaded with ease and thats a big 4 berth job:)

Isuzu Trooper? I have one, not too bad on diesel, tows 2 horses in an old Rice easily. I will be gutted when it dies

Just hijacking :o but can anyone give any mpg figures for any of the above from their own experience rather than Autotrader estimates?

I need to get shot of my 2007 Hyundai Getz as it's doing all of 36-37mpg (!!!) so more like a towing economy - without the capability! I don't know whether to just get a teeny runaround then review again next year or to just go for it and find a 4x4. The problem is that I'm on a limited budget, too (c. £3k) and do 70 miles roundtrip commute each weekday on the motorway :(

Open to Land Rovers but OH has vetoed the Frontera (I'll play the blonde card here as I know nowt about them). Penguin biccies for any guidance...

Def a trooper as recommended by my friend who works for VOSA. i now have a SWB w reg had it 8 months and love it. 3.1 l TD towes 3.5 ton. towes my new IFor and 16.3 on and you dont knnow it is there. i have citation model which has lots of extras but it is good and not like a landy whic we have had. OH will even drive it happily and it NEVER gets stuck. I have driven about 60 miles towing and it has used about £10-£12 of deisel. does about 33-35mpg not towing.

Frontera. Mine is V plate and pulls like a train. Has had an engine transplant tho, from the standard 2.2 to the isuzu 2.8 turbo. Drinks fuel (approx. 25 mtg) i love it!

Another recommendation for the Isuzu Trooper. We've had ours 10 years and I still love it. We only use it as a towing vehicle though.

Thanks for the offer but I won't touch a disco again!! Bought this one end of 06 for £8000 & we've spent another £8k on repairs! it breaks down every 3 month without fail. OH kept repairing it thinking nothing else could pack in but he was very wrong! I did have an old one in the past that was fab, but this one has well & truly put me off!! xx

Oh & it 100% always breaks down if try to tow with 2 ponies in!!!
Probably just got a 'bad un' , but its made me hate them!!

Haha! Sounds like you have a good one!! Just looking for a tide me over at the mo then hopefully can replace with something decent towards the end of the year - just that my mother is getting sick of me pinching hers whenever we have a show! Disco hasn't been able to pull trailer since April!!

My Disco was a heap of junk, terrible turning circle and very slow getaway when pulling which left me and my horse very vulnerable at bad junctions. things always going wrong and never replaced so many fuses and bulbs in my life and haven't since , maybe I just got a badun.

I replaced it with one of these
http://www.caravantrekker.nl/whattowcar/gebruikservaring.php?merk=Ssangyong&serie=Musso 2 or 4 wheel drive , very easy on fuel , Mercedes engine , good turning circle , huge interior with the seats down, would pull a train . Just keep the water topped up and watch the handbrake on uphills
A definite "marmite " car but I loved it ,did its job and cheap.

I have heard good things about the ssangyong actually, thanks!
Just out of interest rambling - what year was your disco? Since I bout mine I've heard people saying not to touch a certain year - which of course mine was!!

It's a terrano I borrow off my mam, an 04 one (3ltr? Or summat like that, the 7 seater one!) & I love it! was thinking one of those when it comes to getting a decent car!
