I was reading one of my old horsey books today and it said a basic thing all horse owners should know is how to take off a horses shoe.

Do you know how to do it and would you?

Um, I can if its half off anyway with the help fo a pair of pliers and a hammer, does that count?!

Not too sure why you'd want to unless the shoe was already hanging off?

Yep - my old farrier - years ago - also said everyone should know how to take off a shoe - so he taught me!

Not sure what I'd do if a shoe twisted out on a hack or something though - don't usually carry a pair of pincers in my pocket.....!

I thought I could, as when a kid I used to take off all the riding school ponies shoes for the farrier.

imagine that being allowed now

But when merlin half pulled his off on the way to a hack, I tried (thanks to Piebaldsparkle providing the tools) and after he tried to kick me, I gave up...... to our defence though, we didnt have a buffer

Ive done it a couple of times, but I usually get the old boy that owns the fields to do it as years ago he used to shoe his own horses so he has the right equipment!

We were taught at pony club how to remove shoes. I do have the equipment and have done on a few occasions now, I thought you had to in your stage 2?

If its loose I can, had to learn as part of my Ride Leader exam and my boss made me do it. Though, like mentioned earlier, I dont usually have farriers tools on the top of a hill or on the beach in the middle of nowhere. Maybe someone should invent a "pocket pack" of mini farriers tools!

yes, i've got all the kit (which really is essential) and even then it's hard work, but i can do it. can tighten up risen clenches etc too, and trim. i think all yard owners should be able to - if you have a shoe half-off and the horse about to pierce its sole on the nails, it's unlikely you can get a farrier there in 2 mins...

I cant, but I found out how important it is with my last horse - he had half pulled off his off fore in the field, and had twisted it so the quarter clip was digging into the base of his hoof every time he put the foot to the floor.

I thought he had broken his leg when I went out to get him in, I have never been so scared in my life....

As it was he walked VERY slowly back to the yard, then it took 6 people about 45 mins to get the shoe off - every time we tried to get the shoe off he banged his hoof down on the floor

- in the end it was the non-horsey OH of one of the liveries who suggested using a lever mechanism and the shoe came off straight away. I nearly hugged him

Thats how i've always done it! Really should invest insome propper tools

Yes. I really think it is something that everyone should ask their farrier to teach them.

I've only had to do it a handful of tmes over the years, it's a lot easier if you have access to the correct tools so you can apply ther right leverage.
