HI,
I have not yet passed my trailer test, am not at all bitter that I passed my driving test only a few months after the rule changed. (damn it).
Does anyone know if I am allowed to tow the trailer on the road, accompanied by someone who is legally allowed to tow, with L plates but with the horse on board????

Confused

Thanks

Yes I believe you can

Can you get a provisional trailer license? I don't know anything about trailer licenses (sorry!) but when I had a provisional HGV license (had to have a medical etc) I drove our lorry on that but only on A roads - not allowed on the mototrway I don't think.

And obviously I had someone with me who could drive it (annoying my sister, who is a few years older, and yet somehow the governemnt deem her ok to drive a lorry on a car license, but not me grrrr!)

I Know someone who does and My OH has been through all the online sites to find out and absolutely nowhere has said no you cant but not in solittle words!! Alot of the sites contradict themselves.

My advice would be phone VOSA and ask...police and DVLA know nout!! Hope that helps.

i emailed the DVLA just the other week asking similar questions - they said about the trailer thing that you can drive on L plates with a qualified person. If you want to drive a lorry which is up to 7.5t you need a category C1 on your license. This is what the DVLA said -

"""If you have provisional category C1 on your driving licence, you must be supervised by a qualified driver holding a GB or EC/EEA licence who must:-

a) be at least 21 years old

b) hold a full valid licence in the appropriate category and

c) have held that licence for three or more years. """

So I can just stick L plates on and take my friend with me (whom i need for moral support at any kind of show anyway!) and away we go!?! Brilliant! That makes my day that does!

I agree you can tow it with L plates on, with somebody accompanying you who does have the right license to tow. But I am pretty sure you can't legally do it with a horse on board. Somewhere that does trailer training will know all the legislation on it, ring and ask. You are in effect a learner driver when towing, and therefore you couldn't go on motorways either. It's a waste of time asking the DVLA as they just send back quotes without clarifying anything!
