Can you train a dog to use a certain area of the garden to use for their toilet.

Has anyone sucessfully done this?

what would be the best way of makong a toilet area?, an area of gravel, fencing off a small area?

Any ideas/ suggestions

Is it a pup? Ours were taken to a specific area of the garden and toileted after every meal, on waking up etc, tons of praise, massive fuss, now it's just automatic. We also taught them the command to go out and toilet :o: they run full pelt to do this! So funny!

I saw something recently about that (think it was in a dog magazine?) and they created an area in the corner of the garden (needs to be next to a fence/hedge apparently) by just laying a hosepipe or rope. THen as suggested above, encourage them to use that area and make a big fuss when they do. I'm a firm beliver that you can teach most dogs to do just about anything if you work hard enough at it!....

It's in this one.....

I managed it with ours when I was staying with my parents for a while. Most of their garden is decking and flower beds but they have a raised bed which is just covered with slate gravel and they asked if I'd make sure the dogs used that. It was just a case of initially taking them onto it rather than just letting them out of the door and they caught on really quickly.

It does make things much easier. We're moving soon and the new house had a gravelled area down the side of the house so we're going to put a little fence up to separate it from the lawn so not only is cleaning up after them easier but they won't trash the lawn in bad weather either!!

You can of course train this in the same way as you can train a lot of other things, but in mind you might need a good bit of drainage, some dogs do not want to wee in the same old place all the time, it would be a bit like going in a loo that was never flushed.

Yes. We have a lawn and also a gravel/slate type area at the other side of the garden. OH trained our lab to go there. Makes life so much easier when cleaning up after her.

It didn't take long to get her to do it there and now its automatic and you dont have to tell her.
