can you use any waterproofer on horse rugs?

I saw some in the garage that i use for proofing our tent and wondered would it be safe to use on the horses rugs...im sick of washing them and re proofing only to find the first bit of rain goes through...ive tried most horsey ones over the years...
 
I'm sure it's be worth a try, though these waterproofers for tents don't work if the tent is touched from the inside, so I imagine it'd be the same on a rug.
Your best bet is to find a cheap brand of rug that suits you and buy new yearly.
 
I used tent re proofer this year - I bought a big can of it and painted it on. So far none of the rugs have leaked, fallen apart or seem to have suffered in any way. I am not entirely sure if the rug is still breathable though (hard to test!). I have also done my coat with the same stuff
