I know washing can effect waterproofing on a rug but can it affect uv protection? The rug I have is high uv to help with photosensitivity but it’s a bit manky. Will be needed soon enough so I’m just wondering what to do :/

Well in human clothing uv protection is given by the tight weave of the clothing and it's thickness nothing to do with a chemical coating. Also when clothing has been tested normal clothing has decent uv protection which correlates with its thickness. I looked at this when my children were toddlers when I briefly considered buying uv protection clothing.

So on this basis I'd wash it.
