Basically I need my rug for a horsey fancy dress class, but I also want to ride in the class. It's not for long and I'm sure wont have much ridden work, will it be okay do you think?

But then I guess I may as well be riding him bareback? Which is an option but he's never been with as many horses as will be there for the show so maybe not the brightest idea... :/

I'm sure either under or over for a short time cannot hurt, you're not going XC like it after all! and whats the difference between a rug and a numnah under your saddle?

do you mean riding in the fancy dress class? If so yes, I'd be prepared to put the rug on top of the saddle if I really needed to.

Putting it under the saddle with the front folded under the saddle flaps isn't really any different to using an exercise sheet though so would be my preferance over a saddle with a rug fully fastened on top, plus safer if your horse takes a dislike to the outfit as you won't get tangled in the rug :)

Not yet seen a fancy dress that has been at anything faster than a walk so as long as the rug is secure I'm sure you'd be fine.:)

What kind of rug is it? I'd be cautious about putting it under the saddle, only because the material might be a bit uncomfortable for the horse if it's scrunched up under the girth.

Put the saddle underneath, and take your stirrups off it. That way you have some security of the saddle, rather than just bareback.

A thin summer sheet wouldn't upset the fit of the saddle whereas a heavyweight winter outdoor rug probably would and put the saddle on top of the rug not the other way round - it's safer. Make sure there are no wrinkles in the rug before you put the saddle on top.

Generally speaking, fancy dress classes only consist of a parade and you aren't expected to do an individual show.

Practise a bit beforehand so the horse/pony will be used to his outfit before he goes into the ring so it'll be one less thing for him to worry about.

I did this a couple of years ago. I'd made his fly rug into 'the sea' and it went over the saddle. I just wrinkled up the sides and popped my feet in the stirrups, worked fine.

I guess if you didn't want to keep the rug you could cut a hole for your seat and slit the sides where the stirrups are a little?
