Canes for inhand showing.........a question

Is it better i choose a brown cane or a bamboo or are both okay? also since i plan to do a fair bit of showing next year under saddle as well as inhand with my welsh, would a 30inch one be about right or do i need a 24 inch one? i would prefer the longer one.

The brown ones are much mroe common. You hardly see the bamboo versions in the ring.

I think mine is 30 inches...not sure though.

Okay was just wondering if the longer ones can be used as its my 3yr old first show and she can be a bit slow off the mark and sometimes needs a little reminder, just to show her the schooling whip.

I'd go for the longer Bamboo one. At least with Bamboo you can have any colour tack. Strictly speaking schooling whips aren't allowed in the ring BUT most people with bigger horses show in-hand with them. Take it with you and if others carry one into the ring then do so also, if no one else does then leave it outside the ring and take the cane in.

Thats a good idea i have been practicing our walk and trots with a short crop thinking i wouldn't be allowed anything longer. Would the bamboo one look okay for ridden classes too? am thinking long term!! good point about the color too, her bridle is black!!

I use a bamboo cane for both in-hand and ridden. Showing everything from Shetlands to Riding Horses. They are smart, not OTT but they don't totally blend in either.

Eek! Memories of a few scandals around Arab showing... please go gently with your youngster, both in the ring and at home. (Not saying you don't but the stuff *some* people do is pretty awful when you look at it from outside...)

30" is fine - just remember if it is affliated shows that is maximum length allowed (as in no schooling whips)
