Apologies for not being in careers but i got no response in soapbox and figured more of you browsing here might have an idea

Can anyone recommend any short course (i.e. less than a year) on Canine and or Feline Behaviour?

(or another way to gain knowledge on this topic)

I know the obvious answer is to do beahviour at college and or uni and do a full time course but I do have a valid reason

There seem to be MILLIONS online but I dont really know which to trust as they are rather expensive. Most animal based colleges seem to do days and weeks in grooming etc but not behaviour.

Do any of these websites look okay? Aparently there is no 'formal' qualification for canine behaviour so which one do you think an employer would respect most? I'm thinking maybe CIDBT?

Thanks in advance! x

Sorry for not being able to offer any good advice others than what you probably already know, but I would advice that you take a good look at who it is that started the education in the first place, who it is that runs it now and their education/background. Also do their beliefs make sense to you?

Who has gone through their education (as in are there any "well known" names) and do you like what they're doing? Educations might sound good and be founded by highly respected people, but can they teach it to others? What people is it that recommends so and so choice? Crap educations can seem to get a lot of praise and good educations can get bad mouthed for various reasons but it usually isn't that difficult to sort out which is which, if they've been around for a while and you're willing to look at it a little more thorough.

My point is that you said "which one do you think an employer would respect most?" and though I acknowledge that prestige is important, I still think that if you get an education that you like, that makes sense to you, then you're more likely to be able to advocate yourself and your education in a good way to a possible future employer.

Good luck.

Yes, yes I know it does take me some time to think through what I want to say and how to say it and then spell check and then erase half of it because I was repeating myself, thoughts wandering off subject etc. And last but not least, question the value of my input. But I was busy writing my response, so technically I had never left your post.

I don't know these sites, but I think you may need to decide what kind of approach you are interested in as there are many different theories out there on how to train dogs and courses tend to stick with what they think is best rather than a bit of everything.

Have you looked at:
http://www.apdt.co.uk/dog_trainer_courses_uk.asp
This association was set up by John Fisher and uses only positive methods of training.

Good luck!
