canine teeth

Ive been trying to eliminate why my horse has been rushing ,hes being rebacked and unfortunately was previously backed with injuries.(not with Me)
Ive just discovered that 3 of his canines are through and last one appears to be erupting.From previous posts you will notice that he just started bolting long reining.
I know wolf teeth can cause problems but would canines cause discomfort?.
He had his teeth all rasped and last baby teeth pulled in may so is due visit by dentist.
Poor lad has been through such a lot in his short life and has been doing so well after his op .
Im thinking he might be sore in his mouth now

Canines don't usually cause any problems with the bit as they are too far forward, although sometimes the upper ones can be a bit futher back so depending on the thickness of the bit, it may be causing him some discomfort. I wonder if they are getting sharp and he's catching them on his tongue perhaps? If that is the case then your dentist will file them smooth.

They shouldn't catch on the bit but I'm sure his gums will be sore!

As spring feather says they could be sharp and cutting in somewhere else so ask your dentist to do a quick check

My boy had exactly the same problem when one of his canine teeth erupted quite late on. The dentist told me that the gum in that area is quite stretchy so it was taking ages for the tooth to break through as the gum was stretching with it and causing discomfort. The dentist made a little cut in the gum to ease the pressure and problems ceased once the tooth was properly through the gum.

Actually my boys' top tushes are so far back he can only go bitless, or in a thin metal mullen mouth, straight Happy Mouth or a Bendy bit.

My rising 6 year old has his upper canines coming thru at the mo, one is thru but the other is just under the skin but it isnt causing him any problems, the area is not even red where the one is under the skin.

Mines rising 6 too.Ive backed him and hes fabulous on ground but think Im going to have to get someone else on him as he wants to face everyone walking beside him bar me.Its trust thing hes nervous round others.Trying to ride horse that wants to face person on foot leading him isn't easy when you are trying to be gentle on his mouth Hes been over held in past and Im trying to undo all negative things
The other canines aren't sharp and hes happy to accept bit when tacking up.
