Hi,
My pony has canker and is in the vet clinic being treated. He thinks the progress of her hoof is good, but she looks more miserable and dejected by the day. She's not eating properly and has lost weight. Tonight I saw them give her feed and she picked at it before stopping to nuzzle me. Now this is a pony who can usually devour more than a 15hh horse, and whose feed lasts about 2 mins on average. She has never, in her life, been interested in anything else when there was food around, yet today wasn't eating, despite a nearly full haynet.

What sort of success rates am I looking at? What was YOUR experience? I don't want to put her through months of misery, only to have to put her down in the end anyway.

i'v never experienced canker, although was quite interested by your post and so just googled it and a lot of info came up, good luck with your horsey keep us updated on her progress xx

you have to be really aggressive with it, pm me if u want and ill give u my no for a chat. my old boy had it in all 4 feet, badly. with my bro (farrier!) and the vet, we got it sorted but you need to be committed and determined to get rid! plus, we got rid of it, only for it to come bac in one foot. but it can be dealt with! NEVER wet it, dont let it get muddy, and arm yourself with loads of terramycin spray! you need to keep cutting it away (gory!) and in bad cases ive found coppersulphate wonderful. good luck x

same as other post, dry dry dry!!! (and clean) good farrier to hack away at any loose hoof (evan if they bleed) standing on dry concrete (like a corral) and bloody clean dry bedding, no deep litter, yrs after my mare had it we still used the green spray and every other day washed out with virkon s and dried, i use to wash her feet out if they were dirty but dried them with a towel, mine still went on to sj and as long as her feet were looked after she was fine, if we slacked then u could notice it coming back, it was hard but i kept her for 7 yrs and it all comes with routine! good luck!!
