Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who answered for their honest responses and their positive messages.

I am so pleased to announce that the x-rays showed up no evidence of any damage to the cannon bone. Uncertain re: the splint bone - there could be a hairline fracture but the films were hard to interpret. Vet has advised a couple of months off work and will then revisit to assess progress / degree of lameness etc.

Just goes to show how robust they can be. He took a 'direct hit' - sounded like a pistol going off by all accounts. Lucky, lucky, lucky...
 
Well, that's good news, bet the owner's relieved. he may just be badly bruised. If the splint bone's fractured it's not so big a problem. Glad to here some good news!
 
Last October our mare fractured her near hind splint bone in five places as you can see - after nearly five months box rest she is about to be turned out again. The vet is coming on Monday to give her the (hopefully) final once-over, but given the major hoolie last week when she buggered off when we were trying to hand graze her she seems as sound as a pound.
