With the Foot and Mouth problem still raging,my yard borders on the buffa Zone of the 3k and my house is just up the road, while putting out my washing today, I heard horses being ridden down the Bridle path which runs into the woods next to my house, this wood holds alot of deer(I know as the buggers are always eating stuff in my front garden!

) Surrey is well known for a large deer population that run free across the countryside here, have found small herds in our fields, untill the horses disturb them when turning out first thing! So why our yard stays in confinement, others have no respect at all,did go out to go after them, but they had gone, they don't watch the news or our oblivious!

why shouldn't they ride out ?

after all - defra is only stopping horses inside the zone - they aren't stopping dog walkers or pedestrians or mountain bikers this time round as the 'countryside is open'

deer - it doesn't matter - they go where they want but the deer thing is a red herring - has anyone ever found a deer dead from F&M ???

NO

reason is that F&M as PF will tell you - is something that animals get, suffer from and then recover from

the ONLY reason why F&M is such a 'panic' thing in this country is that we are theoretically F&M 'free' and therefore 'sensitive flower' type countries will buy our meat where they won't buy argentinian meat (e.g.) 'cos that country has endemic F&M

as PF has been posting on here for a few years now and argentina is rife with F&M then assume that it won't kill you to eat meat from a cow or whatever that has had f&M

the accountants are responsible for the culling and slaughter - not necessary to help the cows

just think - did those 'sick' cows on the TV that were being massacred at the original farm actually LOOK sick ? - NO they looked fine

this is just economics - nowt to do with animal welfare or public health whatsoever

Why shouldn't they ride out??? as they can transmit the disease thats why, also pedestrians cyclists and everyone in that area should be doing their up most to stop the spread. As for deer, yes they transmit the disease aswell and are a major concern as vectors, which does not need to be encouraged by people riding, walking or cycling on areas where deer may pass.

No foot and mouth does not kill but it is a very nasty disease which makes livestock go down hill very quickly, with ulcers in their mouths they do not want to eat, with ulcerations between there hooves there hooves becomes seperated making them extremely lame and thus causing fertility issues and weight gain, they do not maintain condition nor do they fully recover their condition once the disease has passed, making the livestock worthless. Look at the argentinian farmers and their livestock-the livestock look appaulling compared to british stock and the farmers livelihoods are pitiful in argintinia due to this as they cannot produce healthy thriving livestock as they are disease ridden-hence why they make little money out of it!

These "accountants" are saving the farming economy and farmers livlihoods in britain by keeping us disease free and allowing for greater returns on the livestock the produce.

If foot and mouth was not a serious disease, they why do you think it is notifiable? Because it will ruin the farming economy!

Everyone must take appropriate action to prevent the further spread and stop being selfish by wondering around the countryside thinking it wont affect them- it will eventually when you eating poor british meat and farms are sold up for development as the farmer cant make a living, then you'l be complaining there is no countryside to go out riding!

Well done _OC_ for being responsible!

no - I wouldn't have had words with those riders because if the walkers, cyclists and dog walkers are allowed onto the paths then the horse riders should themselves ought to be able to use them - so WHY should they be pilloried

I totoally agree that the paths should be shut - but they should be shut to ALL as they were in 2001 and not just pillory some horse riders which was the original post

F&M affects the economy of farmers but other countries survive this and so would we

to keep a simile in mind - we are so 'island mentality proud' that we haven't got rabies here - but the continent and the USA have rabies endemic - does it bother them - NO - they just get on with their lives and vaccinate their animals

so should we with F&M - all the time we were disease free for 30 odd years - yeah fine - don't vaccinate - but we've now had this disease twice in 6 years - so give up, vaccinate and get on with your life

I farm - I've got livestock and I'm in Surrey - but if we vaccinated I'd be cheering as I'm aslo into animal welfare and what happened in 2001 was brutality and if any of us did what the gov. did then we'd be prosecuted, banned from keeping animals, fined and probably imprisoned

get real people - with global movements disease spreads faster - the 1917 epidemic of flu spread because of troops going home from WWI in France - by BOAT - can you imagine how fast that would spread now with air travel

this is a global world - isolationism is passe - so get on with the vaccination and stop these animals being brutally slaughtered

and for those of you that think the SVS know what they are doign I had scrapie testing done on some sheep and it took the SVS 5 attempts to find a vein to draw blood from - it was more like carnage than animal testing and these are the same people looking after things at Normandy

if they can't do a simple blood test humanely then how can they slaughter a cow humanely ?!!!!!!!

Because the yards round here are not hacking out and also Merrist Wood round the corner holds cattle and sheep, because all the yards round here are not far from Pirbright, and all of them have a barrier of straw or some form of bedding that is heavily disinfectanted and to be honest the commons near us are very quiet,no mountain bikes or dogs and because a deer that was killed on the A31 caused the road to be closed for 4hours while it was cleaned up with disinfectant...because we have a certaian respect here for the farming commumity, because one farm here has rare breeds of cattle and sheep, some could be wiped out so selfish riders should think before they hack,THAT'S WHY!
