To clarify - he is on bail pending an appeal.

In spite of the things he has done, he isn't a mugger, a bank robber, a serial rapist, etc, etc and therefore, on a balance of risk to the public, he is released until the matter returns to court - at least we are not paying to feed and keep him in prison in the meantime

I think I'd be perfectly happy to pay for him NOT to be fed and watered and cared for whilst in prison, and generally neglected. The thought of him walking about free and probably breaking the terms of his sentence makes me feel sick.

I wonder if the tax payers will be footing the bill for this appeal, no doubt JG and his family will be seeking legal aid!!!

The appeal papers have been lodged, as they have to be, within 21 days of the sentencing hearing. The papers are simply a case of completing a pro forma re case number, defendants names etc and brief reasons as to why wishes to appeal. Some will simply say "wishes to challenge Mags court decision".

Legal aid can be treated like a loan and may have to be repaid in certain circumstances so even if he is eligible for legal aid now, there is nothing to stop him having to pay later on. He will have to comply with bail terms etc also. There is also a risk the Crown Court could increase his sentence and costs payable.

Have to say that if I were on JG's defence team I would not be advising appeal against conviction but then solicitors and barristers always have to act on their client's instructions, however stupid those instructions might be!
