Can't afford to look after pups, a little confused about rules?

Hello all :)

I've got a gorgeous golden retriever who just recently had pups and I just can't afford to keep them, and I'm going to have to let them go, as much as I hate to :( I was wondering if I will have to pay any tax on the money I get from selling them, as she'd had 9, I'll be keeping one or two and the rest will be sold for a few hundred each (pedigree, I'm not remotely a breeder though! :P ) I was looking at this wage calculator the other day figuring something else out and thought I'd add what I think I'll get for the puppies and it's not an insignificant amount of tax I'd pay on it! Can someone let me know how it works? Thanks :)

I'm also thinking of donating to a charity around homeless dogs, anyone got any suggestions for some legit ones?

Just curious, why did you let her have puppies at all if you aren’t a breeder and can’t afford to look after them?

Yes of course you have to pay tax on the money you get from selling them, it’s taxable income just like a salary

And that’s without even going there about what an unusual first post for something who joined the form yesterday :)

I'm not sure this is correct if you're not a breeder or making X amount per year. Where did you get that info as I'd be interested to read?

How many people are really going to declare a one-off litter?

I assumed the OP was a tax payer already, so had income that took them over the threshold. Money from puppy sales would count as income according to the inland revenue - I’m sure many people don’t declare income from a one-off litter but they should do so

Just to throw a spanner in, if the OP is not a breeder and had the puppies by accident, then would she not be seen to merely be selling second hand goods? Rather like if a private owner sells a horse.

That was my thought - I don't see why you'd have to pay tax on a one-off litter when we don't pay tax for private sales of horses/dogs/cats/whatever else.

Either way OP, I don't think it's something that needs to keep you up at night...

Yes I would agree with this. If you were regularly breeding and making a living from it then of course you'd have to declare it and pay the appropriate tax but for a one off litter I don't think so.
