Just wondered does anybody know - is it possible for a dog to be unable to bark ?(unless of course it has been debarked but I think they only do that in America?)

We have a spaniel cross something that we have had for about 2 years now. She came from a rescue foster placement at just under a year having been dumped as a puppy.

We have NEVER heard her bark! She makes little yelps when she chases rabbits and lots of excited snuffling in greeting us when she sees us and once, when my horses got out she howled, we went down to find out what was wrong and found horses loose!

It doesn't cause her or us any problems but I just never knew of a silent dog before!

It's totally possible, our neighbour has one similar. It may be they physically can't, or just they never have, wouldn't worry about it anyway!

crossed with a what?! LOL

We actually don't know as she is a rescue but by looking at her there is some combination of spaniel, collie, possibly black lab?

Interesting that there is actually a breed that doesn't bark, will google it to have a look but I would guess she is just a general heinz 57 mongrel!

She might be just a quiet dog..our labrador rarely barks except when someone comes up to the house...maybe she just hasnt or experienced anything to trigger her barking yet?
Wolves dont bark tho and neither do most wolf Hybrids...not that your dog is one just a funny fact!

Well, she looks nothing like the Basenji so I don't think that's it but I read that they don't bark because the shape of their larynx / voice box is diferent so they can't so unless it's something like that.

If I had ever heard her bark even once I would say she was just quiet but never in 2 years! Oh well, it's a nice complaint, as someone said, it's quiet at our house!
