So after 2 years of struggling , lots of up and downs I decided to face facts, Ludo was in fact too much horse for me so I sold him.

He bucked me off again this time on the flat, he was just fresh but my confidence was slowly itching away , and it was not fair on him or me.

He should be doing 1.20s by now yet I'm struggling piddling about still over 80cm as I can't sit to his jump, yes I know he has no ambitions but he so talented he deserves a shot at bigger things.

Two weeks ago I was galloping him across stubble fields content in the fact I thought he would only ditch me if I mess up a show jump but now he bucked me on the flat next time I hacked him out I would of been pretty scared, which of course would not be good for him either.

Absolutely gutted, two years of blood sweat and tears and bucket loads of money on pro schooling for us to just part ways. I thought I could learn to ride him but clearly not, all the pros get on fine with him it's just me who he has issues so it's clear to see I'm the problem so I let him go.

I'm very sad , and sat till 9pm the night before he was leaving crying in his stable , cuddling him. I adored that horse, he is 1 in a million with a nature second to none.

Someone will get a cracking horse who has had the best start in his ridden life money could buy, I feel jealous but wish him and his new rider great success

I've got a new horse, a lot smaller too I feel safer, a wee 16hh 9 year old KWPN mare by Tolando, who has not done a vast amount , some dressage in holland , and bred two foals. But she is sweet and willing and far more suitable to me than a big strapping powerful lad like ludo

Sorry to hear that you made that call, but sounds like the right call for you.

Plus.............
Cant beat a chestnut mare!

Sorry to hear about your hard times. But I just wanted to say I have an 8 year old mare by Tolando too!
She's a massive clown and makes me smile every time I see her, so I hope your new one will do the same for you.
Hugs

(and it looks like they have the same face almost!)

Yeah defo was only been back on him 5 weeks after a fall in May resulting in my ripping hip muscle , ligament, doing discs in my back and long term nerve damage. I was not allowed to ride for 4 months , Then to be chucked again and land on same hip - lucky not too badly hurt but it scared me I'm too old to keep getting broken by a horse, it was worrying me and had become a huge sore point between me and my husband, he hates the horse due to me getting hurt bad a few times and had said pretty much if I ended up in hospital again it was him or the horse type thing. As he sick of watching me struggle about in pain. Etc. I do understand where he coming from. He a lot happier I have a new horse, I just hope me and her work out.

Awww do you - how lovely. Is your mare quite dressagey ..? This mare has a very flashy trot, but I'm hoping she will jump a bit too , but if not I will just take up trotty circles stuff and become a dressage diva instead :-)

I mainly compete her in dressage, but we do a bit of everything to keep her from getting bored.
She has a really nice jump and is very reliable when jumping, although we don't do any massive jumps to be honest.
She's exremly opinionated so a good sense of humour is essential!

Here's a picture bomb for you!

She's beautiful! I think people do get bogged down with keeping horses that aren't suitable. It costs a lot of money to keep a horse, and riding is meant to be fun :) You've made the right decision.

hehe thank you!
Daytona, they have the same eyes and I've just noticed yours rest her back legs like mine too. How funny. Mine can sometimes stand completly crossed legged when resting.
Good luck with her, and I hope to see many pictures of her in the future!

What a brave decision. Sometimes the best decisions are the hardest but I really admire you for having the guts to admit that he wasn't right and getting a beautiful girl who I really hope is perfect for you :-) Have fun with her!

Daytona I remember your posts - quite honestly at least you can say to yourself that you tried very hard. No horse is worth getting injured over though and it sounds like your mare is perfect for you. She is beautiful and you look relaxed and happy with her. I am sure your boy will go onto do great things and be thankful for all the effort you put into his training.

I remember a few of your posts about Ludo, sounds like you tried everything under the sun, and ultimately if its not right it's not right - just like a marriage!! All the best to the big lad and have fun with your pretty girl!!! X

Thanks guys, I changed my user name from Ludoctro to Daytona as don't want to constantly think about ludo as it makes me sad.

Yeah just rode the mare for third time and she can be quite spooky and even though I feel safe and that's a good thing, my confidence increasing already. I used to be gung-ho and scared of not a lot and hope to get back to that , within reason lol.

There a lot of work to be done she very green but I get a lot of support flat and jumping with pros and I will continute thus with zazou as I did ludo , but this time me always on board and them teaching me from the ground - fingers crossed 😉

Rather than them riding and me watching from the side line wishing it was me

A tough call, sorry to read this Daytona. Only you could have made that decision.

Good Luck with the new mare though, she looks sweet :) Look forward to future updates :)

It's a sign of intelligence and growth to change your mind. If you never change your mind, you're never learning anything new.

I'm sure you learned a lot from the experience and you're both in one piece, so you'll both take those lessons forward into the next stage. Some things are not meant to be, no matter how hard you work and how much you want it, and there is certainly no "quitting" in realising that.

Good luck with your new one.

Good luck with your new one.

Try not the think of it as quitting - You made an educated decision that the current situation was not right for either of you, so you took steps to change it. People keep on with the wrong horse for far too long IMO.

Oh yes I've learnt ALOT

1 - I'd never buy a youngster again, in my eyes big powerful young WB should be left to pros

2 - that's even though I've rode for 30 years been reasonably successful at RC type things etc, I'm not as good as I thought.

3 - it don't matter how much you want something , sometimes you don't get them.

4 - you can spend all the money in the world on a horse with capabilities , don't mean you will learn to ride it.

5 - I've learnt that I'm not invincible like I thought and horses can seriously hurt you and it's really not worth it in the grand scheme of things

6 - I can see why there is so many problem horses out there thanks to people mucking up their schooling through lack of knowledge and it's not the horse that's the problem but who ever started it, had I not turned to pros for help that's exactly what ludo would of turned out like, had I tried to bring him on myself.

On the positive notes I've improved my riding thanks to ludo, with the lessons I got on the PSG horse with the hope I could transfer what I learnt across to him. Ive learnt a lot more about flat work and advanced dressage moves, something I was never that interested in, and I enjoyed it, so much so I'm gonna try and do a little dressage with this mare. I always thought it boring, but the feeling of cantering down the school doing 2 time changes for me was a awesome experience and something I'd love to achieve myself with my own horse. - ha ha one day maybe :-) we can but dream xx

Your through it in one piece, Ludo will find the right rider he's young and had his life ahead of him.
I disagree that only pros can produce big competion horses whether your paid for doing something is not not a true indication of ability .
I know several very talented non paid riders more than capable of producing any horse they chose .
Learning horses can hurt you and therefore change your life is a valuable lesson to learn when you are still in one piece at the end of it.
Enjoy your new horse just have fun use the lessons you have learned ,I am looking forward to seeing some nice pictures of your fun together.

Well done for admitting that you were overhorsed and for finding him him a good home :) I dont think there is any shame in admitting being overhorsed and I also dont think you should be disappointed in yourself at all. You tried and tried and gave him the best you could.

Your new wee horse looks lovely wishing you all the best with her shes a fabulous colour :D

Enjoy your lovely mare Daytona it's no shame I have been there too and I love my new mare. I am still paying for my other lad over a year later (keep getting fleeced by trainers on sales liveries that don't train or sell - but that's a whole other story) and can't ride him and he is too much for me to sell from home.

Oh bless you - I have been through a very similiar situation recently so know exactly where you are coming from. I bought what I thought was my dream horse, only to end up with an empty bank account, shattered confidence, and a very unhappy horse.

The important thing is not to see yourself as a failure - you have made a wise decision for both you and the horse, and can now move forward.
