Talk about everything going wrong at the moment. Not been on here much as my father in law has been very poorly. Also as some of you may have read, Ive been recovering from a broken leg and ankle and its not going well.

Well last night, my sister took the horse for some showjumping practice, managed to fall off and has done exactly the same thing as me! We cant believe it!! She went in last night by ambulance and I left there at 1.30 in the morning. Managed to drag myself into work this morning and she cant have the operation until tomorrow as theatre is full.

So now I have no-one to ride my horse. Hes old (16) so do you think he would come back to fitness again if I turned him away for 6 months. Hes been eventing all season so is very fit at the moment. I had heard that once an older horse loses it its very difficult to get him back again. What do you think? Should I try and find a rider for him to just keep him ticking over? I can manage to walk around but any more than 20mins and my leg is agony. (seeing specialist again in a couple of weeks to try and sort it out)

Talk about nothing going right...

oh god, what a total nightmare. very small consolation is that in years to come, eventually, you'll look back at this time and crack up about it.
umm, i don't see why he shouldn't come back to fitness after 6 months off, tbh, but if there's someone you'd really trust to take him on, i'd prob do that, then you don't have to worry about looking after him while you both convalesce!
*vibes to you both!*

Oh god what a nightmare! Hope you're both on the mend soon. 16 isn't old MM - just middle aged. My Section D is 22/23 and if he isn't ridden for a few weeks, the only difference I see is he can be a bit spooky on a hack. I know your ned might not be a cob but I'm sure he'd be fine turned away for 6 months. He'll think all his Christmasses have come at once! You might need to keep an eye on his calorie intake if he's not working and someone will have aching muscles when they bring him back into work, but he'll be fine. Thinking of you both x

I have always been told that if a horse was once fit before, it takes 6 weeks of fittening work to get back to that level. If your horse has been eventing all season and is very fit, then I see no reason for him to come back into work and be fit again. I have ridden a few older horses after them not being in work for a few years and after a few weeks they were already relatively fit, with a bit more work they would have been very fit horses. However it may be benificial for your horse mentally to get someone just to hack him out and keep him ticking over if he has been eventing all season. Can you not even lunge him or find someone to give him a quick lunge a few nights a week?
Hope this helps
Izzi xx

Thanks guys,
I think I will try and keep him ticking over. I can definately lunge and walk out for 20 mins so that will be better than nothing, a couple of times a week. He can have a nice holiday in the meantime and chill out for a few months. Mind you, he loves going out to parties so he may miss it!

Good to hear that they come back ok, and you are right, 16 isnt that old I suppose..he certainly doesnt look it!
