I think a girl from the yard must be on a death wish! Just seen her get her ex-racehorse from the field with a headcollar, proceeded to jump aboard (with outdoor rug still on) and go into the jumping field to do a round of jumps.... without even wearing a hat!! The horse did a quick turn and she fell off, cutting her knee.
She saw me approaching and begged me not to tell her mum and dad........ she's now got an extra stable to muck out over half term.

and if she'd turned herself into a vegetable the YO would have faced hell and probably a totally undeserved court case from the doting parents and the taxpayer would have had to fund her care in hospital.

more than a muppet - irresposible, stupid and warrants a word to YO who's business could be ruined by that sort of stupid accident waiting to happen.

Sort of thing I used to do as a kid. And perhaps more recently although I do take the rug off

I am old enough to make my decisions though, not that its any defence whatsover!

just the weekend i took my tb out with just a headcollar,jumped some jumps and canter/galloped up hill.

But i know him and know it is safe, wouldnt have done it with rug on though, imagine having to run around in a winter coat with a sack on your back-not nice!!
 
ah come on fair play to her you have to admire her gutsiness!!with all the rules and regulations that are around at the moment its rare that kids get the chance to go abit crazy i spent my childhood riding ponies barebacked in from the fields in the riding school were i helped out nowadays kids arent allowed in the fields unless they are catching their own pony and even then they need to have a hat and a pair of gloves on. I think there is such thing as being over protective a kid on our yard cries if her pony does anything wrong she'll never grow up into a decent rider going on like that.
I think it also shows the great trust her and her horse obviously have in each other to be able to jump round a course of fences like that!
 
So do I. I only ride in headcollars and rugs throughout the winter - way too cold for saddles and bridles. Can't see what's so stupid about it; I, along with many others I expect, have done this for decades.

Good deal though - having your stable mucked out!

I was sitting on my pony in the field today, i trust him very much, i dont go stupid, only sit on him for 5 mins but if i fall off its would be my fault and i take the risk when i do ride him.

Is it the YOs problem if a livery falls off from doing something stupid? (I am genuinely asking lol)
 
I do admire her confidence and she is a good rider and I had to laugh when she said she'd fallen off on purpose to see what her horse would do.

Unfortunately Yes. The YO could end up in court even though she/he knew nothing about it! That is why im so strick about hats on my premises. If they want to ride on the road or mountain, bare back, naked with a flag up their ar$e - thats fine - the broken neck doesnt get me in trouble

Llwyncwm, have to agree, while you are on somebody elses land they can held liable for any accidents, so if your gonna ride without a hat/saddle/bridle fine, but do it on your on land, then everybodies happy.

I think I know the case that you are thinking of that makes you say this, but I think you are mistaken.
 
I havent ridden withoput a hat before, I'm far too paranoid, but I remember regularly riding a horse in from the field in the headcollar while leading 2 others when I was about 7!! I suppose you have no fear at that age, and we all used to do it, the field was about a mile away so it would take forever otherwise!
