Just seen on a sussex based horsey fb page the following comment:

"I've just bought a horse and she only came with an old head collar, does anyone have any tack and rugs I could have for free or very cheap"

Now I'm all for picking up a bargain and saving money, but why oh why would you buy a horse without any reserve funds for tack, rugs etc

I just makes me want to bang my head against a brick wall when I see things like that.

It drives me mad too - its not necessarily people without money that do this though, I know one or two very rich people that play the poverty card when buying something!

I think that seeing most people have old horsey stuff in there sheds it is actually a good idea. Why spend out more money unless you have to? Hopefully she has enough money for vets bills.

Facebook horsey groups often make me want to bang my head against the wall- I made a ranting thread the other week after getting in an argument with people who didn't think there was a need to call the vet for a pony that can't walk.

There's nothing wrong with doing things on the cheap- BUT you have to have the money to pay full cost if needed. E.g. you can buy cheap rugs...but you need to be able to afford the vet etc. That will never come cheap!

I have nothing against getting second hand things for very little money, I'm always looking for a bargain. But it did make me think, if she hasn't got any tack, rugs etc for it, what is she going to do if it needs the vet or needs hard feed. She could end up getting a free saddle with a broken tree and end up doing it harm. I do worry with so many horses going for next to no money, it invites those who have no idea of the long term costs into horse ownership. And they may be saving horses from desolate situations to put them into another insecure future.
