my pony has a low trace clip this year. he's been wearing a 40g fill turnout (lives out 24/7) untill till this morning. he wasnt warm underneath the rug so i've put his middleweight 220g on. i cant decide if i should put his neck rug on tonight. they've got 2 shelters and plenty of haylage. he's not lost any weight with the cold as his girth is still one hole less at the mo. but he does feel the cold when wet and it hasnt stopped snowing all day so far and they say another possible 6 inches to fall. i know if i dont put his neck rug on i will worry, but i dont want to over pamper him. he did well last winter with no clip and a 220g rug with no neck. only needing a neck in the wind and rain. what would you do?

If he's just gone from a 40g rug to a 220g rug he should be fine, especially as he has shelter and plenty of haylage to eat. But you know him best so go with your gut feel about it.

Well if you're in one of the areas where its gonna be well below freezng and snow, i would be inclined to put the neck rug on.

Lets face it he isnt going to stew overnight if he wears the neck and it means that you wont be worrying....put the neck on!

thats what i thought, he's not gonna get hot. they had hay when i got down there, but he still came to the gate, which he doesnt do when stuffing his face, so i'm sure he'll appreciate the extra warmth.
