i have been feeding my boy mollichaff calmer for several months and cant really say he is any calmer when it comes to hacking. previously, he had been on a magnesium supplement, and i also dont think it did anything. so, i'm just wondering which one to put him on. the herbal or the original seem to be most suitable and cheaper than the calmer. jst trying to way up the pros and cons of each.

I use applechaff and Equine America Magnitude as a magnesium supplement for my mare. I think it works reasonably well but I started using it to make her a bit calmer when she came into season.

Check the nutritional specification of each and choose which most suits your horse.

I agree with jenhunt too, many of them are very high in sugar and other chaffs such as hifi are better

go with the herbal and maybe try a different calmer - maybe a herbal one?
ETA - mollichaff actually has quite a lot of sugar in, why not try Hi-Fi original?

No it does not necessarily - MolliCHOP, which is an entirely different product made by an entirely different company is the highly mollassed one. Mollichaff on the other hand make several very good unmollassed chaffs....I feed the high fibre alfalfa which is unmollassed and only 2.5% sugar.

thx guys. i've been researching and i think i'll go with hifi original. he really only needs the basics and reading about the sugar contents has worried me. it also comes in bigger bags which is handy, less trips to the shop and is cheaper than what i was feeding him.

HiFi is about £3 more than I spend on Mollichaff High Fibre Alfalfa for the same sized bag

I recently bought a bag of Mollichaff Apple as the supplier didn't have any Hi Fi Lite. They loved it, but got really wound up within a few days - didn't realise how much sugar was in it til then.

I really like the mollichaff....i personally didnt get on with the original...mare loved it but the smell made me gagg so im now on show shine and its fab no complaints...! and it smells nice (but thats just to benefit me!) she does need the added soya oil so im not all selfish when feeding my horse!
