Can't get the mud off

My horse rolled in wet mud and it has dried to a concrete-like state. I used every tool in my grooming kit to try and scrape it off, including a metal curry comb, which wasn't liked. I managed to clear the area of the saddle and girth area,but then had to give up and go out with a VERY muddy horse.

Any ideas? The only thing that works is painstakingly attack every lump with my fingers. Or wait until the winter coat falls out ...............................

Give him a bath, and then stick a turn out rug on him.

I soften muddy patches with Baby Oil, used sparsely. Then leave your horse as usual - rugged, unrugged, stabled, out. By next morning the mud will have crumbled, and can be gently curried out, preferably with a 'bouncy' (sprung) curry comb. This gives minimum discomfort to the horse, and it also waterproofs the coat! Works wonders on manes and tails too.

I used to have a horse like this that I looked after! A rug doesn't always help. He had a very flashy trot and always be splashing the mud onto his stomach! the easiest thing I found was to get cowboy magic products and use that to soften the mud then I would just move it off with my hands or brushes! Ordinary oil works as well but the pony at the time didn't react well to that. It takes a while but it stops you pulling the horses hair out and irritating the skin. hope that helps!
