I have a 4yo welsh sec d mare, she is a gorgeous looking welshy, very pretty and friendly. She is so safe and sensible for her age and will let anyone ride her.
My farrier owns the local riding school and I was asking if he knew of anyone looking to loan her as im moving to uni in 2 weeks... but he didnt and then offered me a very good price for her.
He treats his horses very well and makes sure they are well looked after. Im just put off by kids riding her kicking and yanking her mouth, or am I just being paranoid!? Also he lives his horses out all year but they are well rugged and he has some large purpose built walls to shelter them BUT I still feel soft and would like her to be in although I think she would adjust if fed and rugged.
Theres negatives and possitives I know shes not the type of horse I want and would like to sell her to a 5* home but I dont think I would get this good of a price and a stable bhs approved yard.
What are your views on selling young horses to riding schools and what should I do, im moving to university in 2 weeks :(
Thank you in advance!!!!

Having worked at a riding school when I was younger and seen how dull some of them looked I'm not sure I could sell one to a riding school, especially if she is only 4. She'll have some more physical maturing and growing to do and her happy out look on life could be affected if she's led nose to tail, day in, day out so early on in her life. But at least you would be able to see her and know where she was.
Horses always want to please though and so it's your decision. If she is as nice as she sounds why don't you try advertising her?

I know I can imagen but this is a small riding school and she would probably not be used as much as other places.
I bought her last year only because she was left in the field and skin and bone at my yard, a bit of a charity case... the idea was to bring her up to health break her and do some schooling then sell her on.
Shes not right for me but im a bit attatched and want the best for her and this seems the best option but there are lots of negatives!
I think im scared to advertise her as I dont know where she will end up... she wont make half the amount he offered me in this climate either.
Shes the following type of horse, not very bright but fun and safe, shes perfect for the school I think thats why he wants her.
Such a hard decision!!

Hi I think this is a tricky one.

Personally I would never sell a pony/horse of mine to a riding school as I feel the bottom line is they are there to make money and no matter how good the school is I feel that there will always be a time when the horse's welfare suffers becuase of this. Plus you do have the issue as you said of lots of people using far too much leg and often ineffectually whilst at the same time yanking them in the mouth.

I do think they get stale as well, yes some get to go out hacking etc but the vast majority all they know about working life is walk, trot and cantering round the school etc.

But as you say you know the owner of the school so might be very different, in the end it's your decision and you are the only one that knows the school. But I would think of advertising her and seeing what happens first, and I don't want to sound offensive here but which is more important to you the money you could get for her or the life she could have? :)

Let slip im not offended I do think home is much more important but im thinking of the school is a stable environment compared to what she was last year out in the snow skin and bone not being fed much with limited grass... im trying to do the right thing by both of us... where shes healthy and looked after and I can get the right horse for me.

Shes 15.1hh and a little stunner.

If you were thinking of selling her on to an unknown riding school, then I'd definitely say no way. However, you know the owner, you know it's not a very large one and you've been offered a good price.

The choice is yours, but I'd be weighing up the pros and cons of selling to the riding school vs. seeing her go somewhere out of your control which equally might/might not be a good home.

Personally I think I'd pick the former, but like I said, only because you know the owner and the kind of place it is.

Definitely a tough one, so good luck in your decision. I'm sure you'll make the right one!

Hmmm i think it depends on what the RS is like!! I work part time at a RS and they had a 3yr old rode for 3 hrs in a row a couple of weeks ago and on a regular basis 2hrs in a row. And there were a bunch of 4yrs a couple of years ago which are still there now but are completely different horses, stale and one being permenently lame as was used to much to young. And they were broke and aint had a break since. But if you know the YO and know she will be looked after and not over used then go for it.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, she's 15.1 and a 4yo, I doubt they'd let little kids on her particularly ones that are likely to kick and pull. Thing is, when you do sell her to a loovely new private home and take less money for her you have no idea if they will immediately sell her on to a horrible place (shades of black beauty here!).

If you know the RS and you think it's a suitable place for a horse then I think you're probably right. I'd sell, you could always offer to buy her back at some point.
