Well it looks like my broken hip is on the mend although I'll always have two huge 10cm screws in my hip bone! The consultant advised not to get back on til March - mind you he thought horses were just dangerous things and i shouldnt' get back on at all (think a lot of his patients were a result of riding related injuries). I'm walking on one crutch and without them in the house - so in a few weeks should have a bit more strength in my leg to at least do some groundwork.

My horse has been out of work for 3 months because of his op too (we are a right pair arent we!) but i hope i can do some groundwork with him. Perhaps some longreining or loose schooling. Has anyone any good ideas? Maybe now is a good time to practice learning parelli??

I used to take my welsh a out on longreining hacks :)
He was too small to ride, and i couldnt afford a trap/harness/help to teach him to drive so i just longreined him out in the local hacking, i got plenty of exercise and he loved it!
Treated it just as i would if i was riding him, he had a slow trot so he got to do plenty of trotting. Used to school him like this too so he got very fit!

Its actually a lot more fun than it seems :)

Oh it looks lovely where you are! I hope I can start in fields, wouldn't be too confident doing it on the road, even small country ones

Yup you can do it in a field easily :) I dont think i would longrein a bigger horse out on the roads. Im quite lucky because the road i had to go on to get to the country park is very long straight and wide with a verge and i could see over and round my little pony easily!

If it were me I'd be looking at horse agility too... should be good for de-spooking and communication. Plus a great way to impress people!

When I broke my shoulder I did lateral work inhand with her, ie teaching her leg yield, turn on the forehand and rein back from the ground.
Also took her hacking inhand with a bridle and lungeline.
Tried my own version and, attempt at sine form of "join up".
Cones, poles and small fences on the lunge.
